#50 - Ghetto Life 101

From Salt Institute for Documentary Studies | Part of the SaltCast: the Backstory to Great Radio Storytelling series | 38:07

“Ghetto Life 101" is a high-water mark for radio documentary and the story featured on this edition of the Saltcast — our fiftieth!!

“You can do that with radio?!!”

That was my overwhelming response when I first heard “Ghetto Life 101.”  I still feel the same way even after listening to the piece dozens of times.

“Ghetto Life 101″ is a high-water mark for radio documentary and the story featured on this edition of the Saltcast — our fiftieth!!

Dave Isay produced the piece in 1993. Dave gave tape decks to two teenage boys — LeAlan Jones and Lloyd Newman — to document their lives on the south side of Chicago. This diary-style production was one of the first in public radio and inspired a slew of other diary documentaries and youth radio programs (see below).

Dave no longer produces docs. Instead, he manages StoryCorps, perhaps the largest oral history project ever undertaken in the United States.

For the 50th Saltcast, Dave spoke briefly with me about Ghetto Life, some of the controversy that surrounded the broadcast, and how LeAland and Lloyd are doing now.

Two Wheels to Nowhere - Episode 6

From Aengus Anderson | Part of the Two Wheels to Nowhere series | 27:46

Dover, Delaware to Highway 129, North Carolina. Two Wheels to Nowhere is a seven-part series that weaves together the story of one man's motorcycle journey around the United States with the voices of people he met along the way. It is a conversation about people's greatest sources of excitement and concern--a conversation that ultimately explores how different Americans face the unknown.

Ep6_small This is a story of America told through snapshots of excitement and fear. Over the course of three months, Aengus Anderson rode his motorcycle around the United States and asked 166 random Americans the same two questions: what is the most exciting thing in your life? What is the most concerning thing? From beauty shop owners in Cairo, IL to contractors in rural South Carolina, a common theme emerged, one that spanned a cultural divide. From the left to the right, Americans expressed an uncomfortable feeling that something fundamental was off balance. Some worried about an environmental collapse, others a spiritual one, but their underlying disquiet was the same.

Two Wheels to Nowhere is a mix of interviews with a first-person travel narrative, a story that winds its way across American landscapes, both physical and cultural. It explores ideas through counterpoint and finds common ground in unlikely places. It is a story of choices, changes, and facing the unknown.

The 2011 PRPD Benediction by Jay Allison: "Invitation"

From Atlantic Public Media | 51:26

The benediction given by award-winning producer and station founder Jay Allison at the 2011 PRPD Conference is being praised as a highlight of the gathering. Based on a lot of interest, PRPD, PRX and Jay are making it available free to stations to broadcast, stream and share. STATIONS: consider excerpts for fundraising periods to make the case for why public radio stands out.

The Mikie Show #35, Ned

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:03

Join us as we speak with newsman/publisher Ned Creighton. He drinks a lot but that’s okay, he’s in the news business. Nah, I’m kidding. He is a great newsman and a conscientious objector to irrational reporting. Well, he’s recently retired but that makes things all so much easier. We talk about running a newspaper (which he did) and reporting the news (he did that, too). There’s also a visit from, aw shucks, I just can’t ruin it for ya, you’ll just have to listen to find out. Let’s just say we have a new guest this episode. What else, hmm, there’s a quiz, I think, and some of our own news, and so much, I get worked up and start to choke up! That’s two ups at a time! So why not click the little arrow and find out what makes the world of independent radio so darned wonderful!

From Nate DiMeo | Part of the the memory palace series | 05:45

In which we hear about the Mad Gasser of Mattoon. In the 1940's, someone--or something--was prowling around Mattoon, Illinois spraying knock out gas into people's homes in the middle of the night. Except there wasn't. This episode tells the incredible story of one of the most peculiar cases of mass hysteria in U.S. history.
