Hot dog! It's the Wiener Nationals

From KALW | 05:57

This story has all the excitement of a day at the races: ladies in fancy hats, frazzled handlers, strutting owners, and surly gamblers. But the animals in the game are much smaller than at your traditional thoroughbred race. In fact, they're wiener dogs, and they are racing like the wind. It's the Wiener Nationals, and you can catch the next one at the Golden Gate Fields racetrack this Saturday, April 9. KALW's Thea Chroman attended the Wiener Nationals of 2009, and takes us back down to the track to witness the day of glory that is the Wiener Nationals.

There were ghosts everywhere: AIDS in Provincetown

From Sarah Yahm | 12:13

Residents of Provincetown, a small fishing village and world reknowned gay vacation destination, remember the devastating affects of AIDS

Provincetowneastend_small From Memorial Day to Labor Day Provincetown Massachusetts is one of the world's largest and most well known gay vacation meccas.  This small fishing village is festooned with pride flags, drag queens, and gay couples of all ages holding hands and ice cream cones.  But in the late 80's and 90's, while the party continued, 10 percent of Provincetown's year round population was dying of AIDS. And most of the remaining 90 percent were tending to them. This piece is about what it was like to live and die in this small town in the midst of this epidemic and the surreal mix of celebration and devastation.

The Road to Livingston

From Abigail Mahnke, host of Inner Views | 27:00

I interviewed filmmakers Erik Mauck and Chelsea Hernandez about the feature length documentary they're in the process of making, called The Road to Livingston. It features Delia Meyer, whose brother Louis Perez has been on death row since 1999 but steadfastly maintains his innocence. She has been visiting him virtually every weekend for the last 12 years, making the 4-hour drive from Austin to Livingston, TX. In the process, she has come to know many families and friends with loved ones on death row, as well as the community members who service the prison.

Erik & Chelsea tell fascinating stories of European women who marry men on death row after being their pen pals; of the woman who touched her husband for the very first time at his funeral after he had been executed; of the communities that depend on the prison for their economic well being; and much more.
