New Audio Showroom #3 - Audio Mavericks

From Wisconsin Public Radio | 53:04

This is the third episode of the radio show that literally reinvents itself every time it hits the aiwaves.

Gordondoug100_small This program profiles people who have discovered innovative ways to use sound -- whether it's music, spoken word, ambient noise, or perhaps even the sounds of silence. In this episode: - John Linell and John Flansburgh of the alternative-rock duo, They Might Be Giants, discuss their "Dial-A-Song" phone service. - Mal Shapre talks about the street-smart comedy "terrorizations" that he created with his partner, Jim Coyle, on the streets of San Francisco during the 1960s. - Doug Gordon reports on the strange history of the theremin, the only musical instrument that is played without being touched. Gordon also explores the theremin's connection to the Madison, Wisconsin band, "The Theramones." - Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Steve Nieve talks about the music that he has made with, and without, Elvis Costello. Originally aired on Wisconsin Public Radio's Ideas Network in August 2004.

Join us for a fascinating discussion with anthropologist Dr. Ellen Basso. She has spent many years living with, studying and writing about the Kalapalo people of central Brazil. Deep in the Amazon. Coolness. Our main focus is their language and how it helps us understand their culture. Especially interesting is their story telling tradition. I've posted an excerpt from one of Ellen's recordings here.  There's also a visit from Claude, poor thing. It seems he's lost his, well, you'll see. There's news, a quiz and so much more, I had to take a nap afterward!

Au Debut was produced by Zoe Irvine for the 2006 Third Coast ShortDocs Challenge: 99 Ways To Tell a Radio Story. Inspired by cartoonist Matt Madden and the french literary group Oulipo, the 99 Ways Challenge invited anyone and everyone to produce short audio works following a set of rules. Each submission had to:
- start with some manifestation of "To begin with, they never got along."
- include a pre-recorded voice, rhythmic noise and exclamation
- last exactly 2:30 minutes

Grad Student on Full Fellowship

From The humble Farmer | 02:09

You might think your daughter is doing well if she is dating a grad student on a full fellowship.

But you might want to keep in mind that for years I was a grad student on a full fellowship.

Weird Beliefs

From KVNF | Part of the Belief Systems and Other B.S. series | 03:31

Weird beliefs are incredibly common in religion, and also incredibly useful.

From

Bwheadcopysmooth_small Many common religious beliefs, such as transubstantiation, are nonetheless weird. Why do so many religions have such weird ideas? Could it be that the weird idea, once accepted, acts as a sort of fence, keeping believers in, and others out? I had a lot of weird ideas when I was a fundamentalist, and this informs my thoughts on the matter.

Pantera Blacksmith - Competitive Pole Dancer

From Abigail Mahnke, host of Inner Views | 25:01

As a pole dancer, Pantera travels all over the world performing and giving workshops. She has won titles (who knew such things were awarded for pole dancing?) and she's got a pole dancing DVD. Oh, and did I mention she is covered neck to calf in tattoos? She talks candidly about starting as a stripper and things like wardrobe malfunctions.
