Review of One Computer Voice Too Many

Anyone who's been stuck in automated customer service hell (and I assume that's everyone) can relate to this upbeat yet informational piece. Strickland combines her commentary with phone cuts from using an automated service along with interviews. Pretty great variety for a three-minute piece that brings humor to the sad future of automation we face. This piece would work on any news magazine program or as a drop-in. There's a host intro at the top that would have to be edited out and the piece ends as quickly as saying goodbye on the phone.

Review of My Name Is Iran

A fine production with great use of sound. Well thought out and reported yet contains an added plus of personal disclosure by the producers so we know their perspective and background allowing for an insider's insight. Rarely do we hear this depth regarding the Middle East and particularly the women of Iran. American Radio Works is to be commended for taking on documentaries of substance. This program would make a worthy one-hour special for any station. There are many tie-ins to holidays such as Ramadan and Women's History Month. But really this can and should air anytime.

Review of Learning to Hear

A good, solid report. A variety of voices and thoughts laden with important information. Often stories from the deaf community aren't done because of the difficulty to report the stories. We hear from a deaf woman who can talk to us about the issues facing her. What's missing for me is the political and practical controversy in the deaf community about the cochlear implants for children and in general for adults. The implants don't often work. And when they do, the sound can be similiar to being underwater at best. Many in the deaf community question why one would need them and how this operation might remove them from the deaf community. Otherwise, this is good work from a new producer and a plus to any station's news magazine.

Review of Yo-Yo Ma: In his own words

I could listen to pieces with and about Yo-Yo Ma all day. Not only is he a brilliant musician but he's a skilled and expressive communicator. Artists often have a difficult time explaining and their art. Not so with Ma. This is an excellent arts piece with intricately woven music and interview segments. Would work in any magazine show. Highly recommended...

Review of Pain & Anxiety Management

A good solid report. Useful update on the benefits of self-hypnosis. Part of a longer series so stations could air this one by itself or as a three part series for news magazines, health shows or as a starter for an interview program about hypnosis. Kinda long though as features so wouldn't work on all magazine shows.

Review of The Story of the Peat Bog Soldiers

Great production values and creative use of music, archival sound and actualities. Difficult subject to pull off - the story of one song written in the concentration camp era and its impact on the world. But several obstacles here to getting airplay in America. The narrator has a strong accent that I found difficult to follow while listening in the car. Not so hard to follow on the internet but a good majority of people listen in their cars or kitchen radios and that has to be considered. The piece is at an odd length - 38 minutes - and might be a challenge to program. But the material is just not that accessible for American audiences. The significance of this song is just that clear here. I doubt if most people have heard of it. That would be difficult to program and to promote.

Review of RN Documentary: Six Ways to Vermeer

I'm a fan of Radio Netherland's documentary work and I really looked forward to this piece after reading The Girl With The Pearl Earring. But here's the deal...you have to KNOW the paintings to appreciate this doc. There are three featured paintings and the producer moves through a discussion of the works with beautiful music and articulate historians. So I liked the The Girl segment because I could picture the painting in my mind. The other two segments discussing paintings I didn't know left me a bit...well...clueless. I don't know that most public radio listeners would have more of a reference point so it's difficult to recommend to stations unless programmers are certain that their listeners would know all three paintings. If this were TV, no problem. If this piece was audio for a web stream with the paintings posted on the site, great. But as a radio documentary for an American audience, I think it would be difficult to program.

Review of RN documentary: At the Circus

From musical opening, you know there's something special coming. Producer Dheera Sujan interweaves her narration with voices from circus performers as they reveal their day to day experiences amid circus music/ambience along with comments by her own young daughter. Not the high-tech cirque du soleil type circus but the real down-to-earth original circus of family performers who have dedicated their lives (and in some cases limbs) to the circus world. I especially appreciated Sujan's query to how animals are treated and trained. A great piece for families to listen to together. Stations could air this during festive, holiday times or during the summer when people might be going to the circus or to carnivals. Captivating from start to finish....Dmae

Review of Yo-Yo Ma ENCORE: In his own words

This piece is way too short! I want more! Lovely mix of music and interview. I suggest pairing this piece with the first Yo Yo Ma offering to make a feature length piece. Stations could use these pieces as drop-ins particularly during fundraisers if you have a nice Yo Yo Ma CD to offer as a premium. Otherwise, magazine shows would benefit from these two offerings...Dmae

Review of Arcade Girl (version 3)

This is piece a good example of how PRX can be used to not only distibute work but to aid in its creation and betterment. I first heard the 15-minute version of this piece and offered Ms. Dunn some suggestions to edit and remix it into a feature that could be used by most news magazines. She went through two more incarnations of the piece and offers this 5:55. Now the commentary, reportage, interviews and field ambience work together to create a newsy yet off-beat feature. There are still some levels that could be brought up and some of the background ambience doesn't work as well for my tastes but this is a solid piece. The info about China's one-child policy and the effect the porn industry is an unsual take on the challenges of family planning and sex education. Any Pacific Rim radio station would do well to air this piece. Certainly Pacific Time should air this piece...Let's hear hear more from this producer in the future...Dmae

Review of Autumn's Story

Not much production, some background rumble and voices, kinda short and simple. But gosh darn it, this piece stays with you. There's something about a lone person talking intimately into a recorder telling the most personal and difficult story of their lives. Draws you in like no other high tech production can do. This is a successful first person story and I hope that Amy continues producing. It's not easy to be this emotionally engaging and she did a good job....Where to air it? A magazine show that deals in first person diary stuff definitely. Certainly a good piece for stations to air for young people and the parents who love them....Dmae

Review of RN Documentary: A Man's Choice - a look at male contraceptiv

What a concept...contraception from a male perspective. Why hasn't this been done before? Kudos to Radio Netherlands for this insightful and frank documentary - I can't ever remember hearing the phrase 'trusty old rubbers" or "men who've had the snip" on public radio before. It's also interesting to hear the cultural differences of contraception in the Netherlands compared to the U.S. A woman who carries condoms in her purse is considered "intelligent" and "proud of herself" and not a slut. This doc also deals with the fears of vasetecomy - fear that Dutch men have overcome as the Netherlands has the highest rate of male sterilization in the world - and an update on the progress of the male pill. "Man's Choice" has a good mix of interviews, music and solid reporting. Certainly this is a piece that needs to be heard by young straight men for the information and reassurance that they do have options for contraception. Stations could air this half hour anytime and as often as possible...Dmae

Review of SONG OF THE CORRIDISTAS

Great production, great story. Didn't know much about the Corridos, Mexican American ganster ballads with a long history since Poncho Villa days. Besides the colorful stories of gunfighters and gangsters, this piece interweaves beautifully upbeat ballads that have now become popular with young people in young, hip L.A. and other parts of the U.S. What a great special this would make for Cinco de Mayo or anytime really. Not just about outlaws, this piece gives insight to the rebels and heroes living out the outskirts of society and the music that keeps their stories and memories alive through song. Give a listen....Dmae

Review of Katie Becomes a Mom

An honest piece of self-exploration. Shows you the power of radio to tell an intimate, personal story that rings true. Simple production - one voice but Blunt Youth Radio is to be commended for providing an opportunity to the youth in this juvenile facility the tools to create some meaning and expression from a sad set of circumstances. There are a some technical problems at the end so it would need to be edited or faded out. This would be a good follow-up for any news magazine that might feature a juvenile crime or detention story. Access to these facilities is hard to get and every state has enough to make this a universal experience for any local station....Dmae

Review of The Ice hotel

I've seen TV stories about it and even seen the Bond film that featured the Ice Hotel, but this piece is the first time I've actually got to FEEL what it might be like to go there. Producer Bill Hammack is an engineer who talks every week about all the buildings and things around us we take for granted and tells us stories about them. Sound boring? Think again. Mr. Hammack is a born storyteller and a natural on radio. The tour of the Ice Hotel is filled with sound, music, interviews and his insightful commentary and description. From the flight to Sweden through the arrival to the hotel with frozen chocolates on the pillow to the trip to the Northern Lights to the interview with the architect, this piece is a delight. Why we haven't heard more from him is a mystery to me. Stations would do well to air this piece in the summer when we're sweltering with heat exhaustion. Think of it as a radio cooler. Let's hope that more episodes of Mr. Hammack's programs appear on this site....Dmae

Review of Low Altitude Flight (deleted)

Okay, this isn't Firesign Theatre or Duck's Breath as far as production values but this improv from the perspective of modern-day passengers complaining about post-Homeland Security flights is FUNNY. I think listeners would love to hear this as a drop-in during local news magazines. There is so little humor heard on the air that's actually funny, I recommend considering these productions to lighten the day. It's topical and unfortunately probably evergreen considering the state of post 9/11 America.... Let's hear more of these pieces...Dmae

Review of The Power of Memoir: Fault Lines

Meena Alexander is worthy of a whole hour about her writing and her thoughts. But this piece isn't as successful as I'd like it to be. It has everything going for it...high production values, thoughtful interviews with Ms. Alexander and her students, captivating dramatic readings from "Fault Lines" -- the focus of this piece.

These elements give an intimate, earnest and personal approach to profiling this intriguing writer. What detracts from the delicate offerings is the use of a distant narrator. I would have preferred more interviews from Ms. Alexander and perhaps no narration or at least a reporter who could add to the mood and style of the piece rather than detract.

Having said that, I do think stations should seriously consider pairing this with other 14-15 minute pieces to create an hour special that could deal with literature, Asian issues, commemoration of 9/11, women's topics--the piece could fit several themes. Producers Laura Jackson and Betsy Morgan are to be commended for producing this thoughtful piece. I want to hear more from them. Just with a different narrator or none at all....Dmae

Review of Road Trip--West Coast

A reminder that taking your time on a trip is just as important as getting there. That the journey starts when you head out the door of your house. Warga meets some great characters on this Road Trip from Seattle to L.A. via train and bus including a cab driver who promotes industrial hemp, a soldier freaked out about going back to battle, a runaway youth. This is an experiment to not drive or fly documented in audio. Warga has a great easygoing style and the piece moves you comfortably arm-char traveling. A bit long for a feature for a news magazine show. But would do well paired up with another long piece to make a great half-hour or a one-hour special with three other similiarly themed pieces about travel or personal journeys. The SOQ out is still in the piece though and would need to be trimmed or faded out for a station to use within local programming. Definitely worth a listen and consideration....Dmae

Review of Jay McShann's "Goin' to Kansas City"

Great production- how can you lose with such fun music and a fabulous interview subject like Jay McShann? Steven Rosenfeld has produced five short sound portraits that can be aired as one whole mini-doc or five individual drop-ins for news magazines or during music shows. I could listen to this music all day. The recordings are crystal clear and clean as Jay McShann reminisces over his long and varied career. Segment #3 with Maria Muldaur is a kick and appropriately sensual. And I loved #5, the official story of how Charlie Parker got his nickname. Rosenfeld says he has more than 350 of these music profiles on his website so seems like there's more than enough for any station programmer to start thinking about making use of drop-ins during the day... Great recordings and soundscape. Loved the movement through places and people. Felt like a personal tour of Bologna. Braider has a great voice for radio. Would have liked to have heard his commentary in first person rather than reportage. His voice could lend itself to the more personal approach. Still this piece would be an assett to any magazine program. Good work!
