About Me

I am a cofounder of The Seattle Globalist, a daily “hyperglobal” publication covering the connections between Seattle and the rest of the globe. It’s where Seattle meets the world.

Our mission is to create a hub for globally-oriented people in the Pacific Northwest through accessible journalism that highlights international diversity and global connections in our region, and by providing media-making opportunities with an emphasis on diverse voices.

My most recent project is Generation Putin, an hour-long special on young people and political change in the former Soviet Union.

In 2012 KUOW broadcast my most recent series, Refugees in Puget Sound, which was produced through my third Program Venture Fund grant.

In 2011 I worked on a reporting project on young people and refugees in northern Iraq and Syria. Our work from the Road to Damascus project has won numerous awards, including a national Sigma Delta Chi award for magazine writing.

In 2010 I co-produced a four-part series on immigration detention and deportation in the Pacific Northwest for KUOW 949 Seattle, funded by the Program Venture Fund.

In 2009 I reported on education issues in Pakistan on a grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

In 2008, I worked on a series of multimedia reports on water issues in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda with support from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

In 2007 I produced a five-part series, Life on the Duwamish, for KUOW in Seattle, which won the regional Edward R. Murrow award for News Series.

In addition to radio reporting, I teach journalism at the University of Washington.
