Word for Word is a San Francisco based theater company that brings works of literature to the stage. Instead of adapting a script, we use every word of a text in a dynamic, evocative style that communicates the intended beauty of the prose or poetry. The WORD for WORDcast blends this theatrical expertise with a beautiful sound design aesthetic to bring stories to life for our listeners.

The debut episodes feature “The Machine Stops” by E.M. Forster, the first installment is being released on September 17, 2020. This is being distributed as a podcast on our website and major podcasting platforms, but we are also making 59 minute versions for radio stations to use as a self-contained program.

We plan on making this an ongoing, if intermittent series. Episodes will likely be release in batches that correspond to a work of literature. Upcoming stories are planned by Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, Alice Munro, Tobias Wolff, Helen Oyeyemi, and George Saunders (rights pending). Please contact Z Space Director of Marketing Andrew Burmester at aburmester@zspace.org if you have questions or requests about the series.

Debut Story, E.M. Forster's Released in 3 parts:
September 17: "The Air-Ship"
September 24: "The Mending Apparatus"
October 1: "The Homeless"

Written in 1909, this is a dystopian look at the future, where everyone lives underground, is controlled by “The Machine,” and communicates with each other over vast distances through glowing blue plates.

“By her side, on the little reading-desk, was a survival from the ages of litter — one book. This was the Book of the Machine. In it were instructions against every possible contingency. If she was hot or cold or dyspeptic or at a loss for a word, she went to the book, and it told her which button to press.” —The Machine Stops
