From the desert to prison. In eight tight episodes AT NiGHT I FLY dives into the life, work, and philosophy of prison poet Spoon Jackson through interviews, field pieces, and original music/sound design.

AT NiGHT I FLY is eight twenty-minute radio friendly stand-alone episodes.

Spoon Jackson was incarcerated over four decades ago. In that time he has educated himself and became a poet and journalist. Teaming up with sound designer/producer Matthew Schneeman they decided to expand on this lifetime of work. Diving into the past and present with ferocious curiosity they do a retrospect, of sorts, of Spoon's work. Along the way over the eight episodes of this series Matthew learns Spoon's deceptively simple philosophy of 'realness'.

Equal parts Ear Hustle, Radiolab, and Ten Things that Scare Me the podcast AT NiGHT I FLY dives inside and outside of prison to inspires awe through interviews, poetry, field pieces, and a deep array of original music and sound design.

In the show Spoon reads a poem — maybe you like it — they dive into the history, context, and themes and then at the end they re-read the poem and maybe this time — god damn it — you do like it. The subjects hover around nature, love, and silence. Matthew connects the themes to the larger world with field pieces: a visit to a dog spa, queer Star Trek party, bird rehab center, visits the corpse flower, and embeds with a moving company.

Spoons radio work has appeared on The Pulse, Reveal, and his own show Uncuffed. He has multiple books of poetry and a memoir. Matthew Schneeman is a radio/podcast producer who has been featured on public radio, podcasts, and his own show Your Eulogy.
