In 2010 Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, said that “privacy is dead”. By ‘dead’ he meant that it was no longer a social norm. Social media users show they want to share their lives online. No one is forcing them to do it - they prefer to live a life in the open.But privacy is more than consensual sharing - it is the expectation that we can control access to ourselves. The prima donna Instagramming their meal is choosing what to share with others. Big Data, the collection, storage, and analysis of vast amounts of information, poses a bigger threat to privacy than Facebook status updates.
