Jazz at South High

In the Spring of 2010, KBEM received a grant from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. This fund receives 19.75 percent of the sales tax revenue in Minnesota, resulting from the Legacy amendment to support arts, arts education and arts access, and to preserve Minnesota's history and cultural heritage. With these funds, the Minneapolis South high school Jazz program was approached about hosting their own radio show on KBEM-FM, 88.5 FM. Beginning in the Fall of 2010, the show's executive producer, Robert Hayles, and the show's producer and South Band Director, Scott Carter, started to work with South Jazz to create a brand new radio show to be aired on Jazz 88.
Students in the South High Jazz Combo serve as the hosts and musical directors and they decide on the themes for each show. JAZZ AT SOUTH HIGH features music from past and present South High Jazz Ensembles as well as brand new recordings by the South High Jazz Combo.
