Review of Dealing With Loss

While looking for an answer to one of life's great questions "Why do people have to die?" Krystle Murray ends up talking to her mother, a funeral home director and a teacher to try to make sense of the death of her cousin. I liked the piece because it was real. It made me remember the pain of losing people and how it doesn't ever really make sense. The topic of death and grief is an always relevant topic since people die every minute.
The feature itself could use some tweaking on the reading of her commentary, though there weren't any major issues. She had audio from a funeral home which I thought was a very original place to look for answers when talking about death. She also used a great combination of personal narration, interviews and music to bring the listener though her journey to find answers.
The piece is overall worth a listen for anyone wanting to hear about dealing with loss.

Review of Dealing With Loss

I like the piece overall. It combines a child-like innocence of facing the death of a family member with the more mature aspect of dealing with and overcoming grief. I truly can relate to this piece because when my grandmother died in 2004, I was only 15 years old. She was my best friend, as well as my favorite person in the world, and when she died, I didn?t know what to think ? what to ask? who to blame? I felt lost and confused, just as Krystle did with her cousin. After grieving though, it was easier to deal with.

I like Krystle?s piece because it accurately depicts the emotions going through a young adults mind with things like death? especially when it?s someone young who dies. The sound bytes, especially the music at the end and interviews near the middle, were superb. I really enjoyed listening to the piece. Another thing about it that I liked was how Krystal?s speech went from unsure and sort of mechanical to more confident. It resembled her attitude toward death in a sense.

Review of Dealing With Loss

Death is an issue we all have to deal with at some point in our lives. Yet, knowing this doesn't make it any easier to handle or understand.

"Dealing with Loss" is a journey into the questions a teenage girl asks about life and the loss of. The writing of this piece is very good. Her descriptions bring us in- allowing the listener to see and feel what she does. Alternating between personal contemplation and the voices of those that she has sought for support.

I must say again, I was impressed with the writing, ...its part storytelling, part internal dialogue and part interviews and conversation. The layering effect of voices is simply done and works well. I enjoy pieces that make me stop and reflect and THIS does that. Without visuals to woo, audio work really has to work hard to maintain a listener's attention. i believe the writer did an outstanding job on this.

Improvements? just a few things I noticed. the narrative sounds like it is being read rather than spoke, I would try to make it a little more conversational as if talking to a friend. There are a couple production areas that could be a little tighter and a litlle smoother fades- some cleaning up. Basically minimal fine tuning and another voice over would make this perfect.
