Using the poem "Where I'm From" by Willie Perdomo as a creative prompt, students created poems to share and express where they come from and how they view the world: their neighborhoods, homes and experiences. After recording the poetry in small groups, students used Final Cut Pro to edit their work, adding music and sound effects to complete their message. A brand new feature that aims to fill the gap where smooth Jazz failed! This series pays attention to the innovators of a music format that gave us Weather Report, Return To Forever, Herbie Hancock and his Headhunters to name three. It also spawned a great number of and the solo artists that have laid the foundations of the contemporary Jazz music scene. For the first edition of this series it seemed totally apt to celebrate the music of a bass player that had an indelible influence on a myriad of artists even though he was only with us until aged 35. Jaco Pastorius engulfed us all with his ground breaking work with Weather Report and as a solo artist. He gave us a clear indication of where the music was going and the extent to the magnitude of his range from a composition perspective. No doubt we will see and experience his spirit through his son Felix who is now finding his own voice taking over the bass chair with the Yellowjackets replacing 30 year veteran Jimmy Haslip also an avid JP advocate and fan. We celebrate this first outing with a musical tribute to Jaco Pastorius and also share words and music from the 18 time Grammy nominated Yellowjackets about the current CD Timeline, the departure of Jimmy Haslip and the new addition of Jazz royalty by tradition ; Mr Felix Pastorius.
