Recovery: Obstacles & New Approaches
Series produced by Side Effects Public Media
In the grips of an opioid addiction epidemic, many communities are increasing efforts to prevent overdose or stem the easy access to drugs. Meanwhile, long-term recovery for many people struggling with drug or alcohol addiction remains elusive.
Despite advances, addiction has strikingly high relapse rates. This series explores obstacles that hold people back from treatment and new approaches to care that can help people stay well in the long term
From the award-winning team of health reporters at Side Effects Public Media, this series addresses obstacles to addiction treatment and recovery as well as some promising new approaches to helping people manage their disease. The first piece is about how insurance rules make it hard to get on buprenorphine, a drug that’s been proven effective in helping people addicted to opioids. The second piece covers a new treatment that delivers long-term relief from the pangs of opioid withdrawal but is hard for doctors to manage. The third piece is about peer-to-peer counseling, a tool for recovery which is gaining respect but suffers from lack of funding for. And finally, we feature a story about a group of people in recovery who learned that acting in a play can help them manage their addiction.
