2013 Third Coast ShortDocs: Stories Inspired by "Appetite"

Series produced by Third Coast International Audio Festival

The 2013 Third Coast ShortDocs Challenge, in partnership with the food-championing James Beard Foundation, invited producers and listeners alike to create short audio works (2 - 3 minutes) inspired by the idea of "appetite," presented in three "courses," and including one of the five tastes in the title: bitter, salt, sour, sweet or umami.

For the 2013 ShortDocs Challenge, Third Coast partnered with the internationally acclaimed James Beard Foundation, champions of food and food culture.

The rules for the 2013 Challenge called for stories that were:
- inspired by the idea of “appetite”
- two to three minutes in length
- presented in three “courses” (think: chapters)
- included one of the five tastes in the title: bitter, salty, sour, sweet, umami.

Third Coast received more than 240 submissions to the 2013 ShortDocs Challenge. Four winners were chosen by Third Coast and James Beard Foundation staff, and for the first time ever a “People’s ShortDoc” was selected through public voting. Five beloved chefs from Chicago [Rick Bayless (Frontera,) Abraham Conlon (Fat Rice,) Jason Hammel (Lula Café,) Paula Haney (Hoosier Mama Pie Company) and Iliana Regan (Elizabeth Restaurant)] were brought on as ShortDocs Chefs, and each responded to a winning story through a unique dish, presented live at the Third Coast Filmless Festival.
