TURNTABLE FOR ONE

Series produced by H. William Stine

An hour of great jazz vocals, produced from a live broadcast on WMNR Fine Arts Radio and wmnr.org. Each show is organized around a different theme that reflects the wry sense of humor and idiosyncratic tastes of the host. Shows feature iconic singers of the past while spotlighting newer, younger jazz vocalists, as well. It's personality radio at its best - or, at least, its quirkiest.

TURNTABLE FOR ONE is a weekly, one-hour show of the best in jazz vocals, featuring classic singers who don't ever need last names – Ella, Tony, Frank, Sarah, Carmen, Nina – along with younger singers who are bringing fresh voices to the Great American Songbook but do still require actual last names. Some favorites these days include Sinne Eeg, Rigmor Gustafsson, Mark Jennett, Kat Edmonson, Mark Winkler, Nicole Herzog, Lucy Dixon, and The Hot Sardines.

Each show is organized around a different, usually light-hearted theme as the host tries to walk the non-existent line between the ironic and the unforgivable. So one week it might be an hour of Face Down, Bottoms Up: A Musical Tribute to Drinking (call your sponsor), the next week, a musical game show, Who's Your Daddy, or maybe a musical tribute to the Low Self-Esteem. One week it was "Stalker Week," because I'll take every listener I can get regardless of their hobbies. And if you're hoping for an all-singing jazz Battle Of The Sexes, well, you won’t be disappointed.

Just about every week there’s also a Mystery Vocalist, more often than not an obscure recording by someone who probably shouldn't have been allowed in a recording studio. But life isn’t always fair, is it?

TURNTABLE FOR ONE is produced from a live broadcast on WMNR Fine Arts Radio and wmnr.org. Look for a new show on PRX every week although that doesn't necessarily mean I'll put a new show up every week. (It'll give you something to do, even while I'm taking it easy - is that so wrong?)

H. William Stine is an author and an award-winning writer and video producer who has created print, digital, and electronic media for decades while managing, for the most part, to stay on the right side of the law. He’s had stints in the past hosting/producing jazz, folk, and classical music programs and a weekly radio comedy show. In 2010 TURNTABLE FOR ONE marked his return to the medium he loves best, radio, and the music he has collected his entire life, jazz.
