Viva City- Festival of the Arts
Viva City is an annual concert performance featuring middle and high school students from the Minneapolis Public Schools. This year, the concert took place at the Ted Mann Concert Hall at the University of Minnesota, and was hosted by singer/actor T. Michael Rambo. The concert features guest performances by J.D Steele, and vocalist, Charmin Michel and also includes interviews with the band directors and workshop instructors, Judi Donaghy and Kevin Washington. Community leaders, Pam Costain and the honorable Mayor of Minneapolis, R.T. Rybak, join us for a showcase of talented band students all across the Minneapolis Public Schools for a night of jazz at Viva City. Listen to the broadcast on Tuesday May 17th at 8:00 on 88.5 Jazz88. Funding for Viva City is provided by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
Viva City was initiated thirteen years ago as a way to showcase arts education in Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS). It is a district-wide event, made possible by high quality programs and the extra voluntary efforts of fine arts teachers. Although participants in Viva City are only a fraction of those involved in visual and performing arts classes across the city, the event motivates students, celebrates student achievement in the arts, and provides staff development for teachers. The arts are vital in Minneapolis Public Schools. There is much to celebrate as we strengthen learning in and through the arts for student success. That success reaps dividends in the lives of our students and in the life of our city for years to come. Hide full description
