Over 2 million youth, ages 12-17, have a substance use disorder. And, fewer than one percent of these young teenagers get the treatment they need. Teenagers coming out of rehabilitation have no where safe to go and more post treatment programs are needed.

The state of Massachussetts is leading the national surge in recovery schools - voluntary, safe and sober public schools for students recovering from addiction to continue their education.

This three-part series examines teen addiction to illicit and prescription drugs, and profiles recovery schools.

Drug abuse is the most costly public health problem. All drug abuse issues combined cost the nation half a trillion dollars each year and it kills 500,000 people every year. Teenagers are especially vulnerable and teenage substance abuse disorders are on the rise.

Part I of this series profiles teen addicts and the growth of recovery schools led by the state of Massachussetts. Part II focuses on the prescription drugs abuse problem and the firsthand accounts of two Utah physicians who are trying to change both the the medical communities prescription drug system and recovery strategies. Part III explores what Salt Lake City is offering currently to drop outs and recovering addicts who need a place to finish high school.
