Jamestown Virginia, settled in 1607, was the first Virginia Company colony. A shipwreck in 1609 led to the second.

This series of two pieces on the Virginia Company Colonies traces the accidental English discovery of Bermuda when a supply ship headed for Jamestown in 1909 shipwrecked in the islands. Part one details the event that led to the discovery, the bounty of the islands, how the news reached England and the extension of the Virginia Company's charter from the Crown far enough out into the Atlantic to include Bermuda under the company's umbrella.

Part two details what the Virginia Company learned in it's first colony that helped in founding the second. Land division and governance are discussed, along with the conversion, some 60 years apart, of the company charters to royal charters.
