A series profiling the personal stories of transgender residents of Western New England, and their civil rights efforts.

When you look at someone, a stranger at the library, on the street, what's the first thing you notice? Often, it's their gender. For some people, though, gender isn't so easily divided into one category or the other... For years, many transgendered people tried to blend in, out of fear of discrimination and harassment. But recent events have started to change that.

In this series, Producer Tina Antolini brings a series of portraits and reports on members of the transgender community in Western New England.

Parts 1 and 2 are non-narrated portraits of transgendered Massachusetts residents, telling their personal stories (growing up feeling as if they were in the "wrong" body, deciding to transition, life in their "new" gender). Part 3 is a more conventional reported piece on the debate surrounding civil rights legislation in MA and CT, and the challenges transgender activists ran into in trying to get them passed.
