Noticeables (Hour 1)

From D. Grant Smith | Part of the The Appetizer Radio Show series | 59:02

The presentation this time is called Noticeables because many of the artists are emerging acts who want just that, to be noticed and discovered by you. Here’s the thing, in the digital age of the Web, social media, youtube, and infinite possibilities the whole concept of “Musical Discovery” is a bit ambiguous. Instead of discovering, what is we embraced and celebrated great music? That’s what we’ll do this time as I showcase to you artists worth noticing. On the way we'll treasure Noticeables like emerging artists David Nyro, Dan O'Conner, Timothy Palmer and much more.

Thanksgiving Special-Friends Giving (hour 1)

From D. Grant Smith | Part of the The Appetizer Radio Show series | 59:02

For Thanksgiving week, I have a series of songs from fantastic albums that are all about gathering together in appreciation.

There’s a trend that’s catching on, and I admit to being a little late to the party on this, but the celebration of Friends-Giving is a really cool thing, and a way to communicate thanks to friends outside of the family line. That’s what I want to do this week with you right here. I appreciate the connection you give me and for you spending a little bit of time right here with me each week. So this time I have a collection of some of my favorite albums from the past few years, many of them new releases. Indie singer-songwriters Calexico & Iron & Wine, Samsel and the Skirt, Brandi Carlile, and Andrew Belle on the way plus alternative’s Augustana, Blues Traveler and more.

Ruckus Creation With Seth Godin For Marketing, Musicians, And Purple Cows

From D. Grant Smith | Part of the The DIY Artist Route series | 19:40

Seth Godin joined me in an exclusive conversation on what makes real art (and what is just weird), why most musicians aren't building tribes but should, and the essence of the purple cow. Modern marketing for business and music is bent on gaining attention, but that misses the mark. This conversation goes in more places than just music, and apply to anyone in the creative space looking to create something that gets people talking.

Brian-bloom-seth-godin-in-green_small Seth Godin is a best selling author and marketing expert, the brains behind cutting edge marketing principles expressed through books like The Dip, Purple Cow, All Marketers Are Liars/Tell Stories, and Tribes. Though his podcast guest spots have been limited in 2016 (with one other spot with Tim Ferris on the Four Hour Work Week), he joined D Grant Smith for a special chat about music originally featured on the DIY Artist Route Podcast.

Taken from that conversation, this story illustrates how marketing and music/entertainment share similar space, as well as give listeners a more solid foundation for what works in gaining and keeping people's attention. Marketing "gurus" and urge a bandwagon approach to growth are the opposite of what Godin encourages. "Make work that matters" is explored and illustrated in this story, perfect for small business owners, enterpreneurs, and creative professionals alike.
