From Queena Kim | Part of the CyberFrequencies, Pop + Tech Podcast series | 08:30

Jaron Lanier's book "You Are Not A Gadget: A Manifesto" is all the buzz on the web this week.

Lanier takes on what's become conventional wisdom about Web 2.0. You know that Facebook, My Space and YouTube, Blogspot...

We don't need a TV deal, we have YouTube! Facebook tells you who I am! And when us individuals upload everything they know? Well, that collective knowledge is perfect knowledge.

CyberFrequencies been guilty of promoting this point of view but Lanier spins out a dystopic future and draws the curtains open on the proverbial wizard.

Web 2.0 rests on the ideology that the universe is made of computations and we, the people, need to keep feeding information to Google, Facebook and LinkedIn. If we digitize our lives, we'll attain eternal life.

Default-piece-image-1 Yeah, yeah, we couldn't help it. You'd think of it was the second coming of God. In the words of the Wall Street Journal, "The last time there was this much excitement about a tablet, it had some commandments written on it."

Tanya talks to folks at the Glendale Galleria and it appears that the Wall Street Journal wasn't too far off. Even with unemployment hitting record highs in the state, folks couldn't wait to plunk down their $500 and get one.

We dish with KPCC's Molly Peterson about the hype.
