For the aficionado – yep – got you covered with Oscar Peterson, Dexter Gordon, and even some Cedar Walton. For the “I guess I like jazz but really don’t listen to it a lot crowd,” how about Duke Ellington doing some Nutcracker, Lou Rawls and Johnny Mathis & Ledisi with the Count Basie Orchestra?

Sublime-jazz-christmas_small In this extraordinary collection we feature the music of The Count Basie Orchestra and the record "A Very Swingin' Basie Christmas!"

Coinciding with celebrating its 80th anniversary, the legendary Count Basie Orchestra continues to make music history with the November 6th, 2015 release on Concord Records of 'A Very Swingin’ Basie Christmas!' The first full-length, yuletide album in the expansive Basie discography, the album boasts classic holiday songs, rendered in quintessential Basie style, under the masterful direction of longtime Basie trumpeter Scotty Barnhart and produced by seven-time Grammy winner and former Basie drummer Gregg Field. The disc also showcases such guest artists as legendary singer Johnny Mathis, award-winning R&B singer Ledisi, veteran jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis, and iconic tenor saxophonist Plas Johnson (famous for being the soloist on Henry Mancini’s “The Pink Panther Theme”). The album also represents the return of the multi-Grammy winning Basie composer-arranger Sammy Nestico and the 2015 multi-Grammy winning arranger Gordon Goodwin. The results are blues-soaked, joy-filled holiday treats that will delight and warm the hearts of Basie die-hard fans and new fans alike!

STORY | MUSIC

“The Most Dangerous Game” is a classic short story written by Richard Connell. It tells the story of Sanger Rainsford, a big game hunter who finds himself stranded in the Caribbean on the desolate Ship Trap Island. There he squares off against the ruthless General Zaroff, a madman who hunts human beings on his private island.

This tale of survival and hunting is an early forerunner for many novels and movies that came laterThe Running Man by Stephen KingThe Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Rollerball starring James Caan, and The Grounding of Group 6 by Julian F Thompson.

The story was adapted into the 1932 movie of the same name directed by Ernest B. Schoedsack and starring Joel McCrea, Fay Wray and Leslie Banks, and again in 2022 by director Justin Lee.

In 1943, Orson Welles adapted it for the radio show Suspense.

“The Most Dangerous Game” has been called the most popular short story ever written in English. While this may be a stretch, it is certainly one of the most widely read and often anthologized tales in literary history.
