Many countries and regions around the world have their own unique traditions for Mardi Gras and Carnaval, and they often include a similar variety of social activities such as feasting on special food and drinks, masquerade parties, colorful public parades, and - of course - fantastic music. Like the many varieties of gumbo stew that you can find throughout southern Louisiana during Mardi Gras, all of this music is a blend of different ingredients that have come together to make something new and oh so good. On this weekly world music program, you'll hear an eclectic mix of contemporary, traditional, and roots music from around the globe. For this first show of 2020, we take a look back at some of our favorite albums released in the past decade. (Airing the week of 01/04/2020 to 01/10/2020.)

The Rhythm Atlas radio show explores music from all around the world - from Afrobeat to Zouk. The program is hosted and produced by Denis McGilvray in the studios of Public Radio Tulsa at the University of Tulsa. Each week’s program usually features an eclectic mix of musical styles from all over the globe, and some weeks the program is focused around a particular theme or holiday. 

The program is uploaded to PRX each Friday, generally aimed for airing from the following Saturday-Friday. The audio files are split into two roughly 29-minutes parts with a 1-minute instrumental music bed break included. The Rhythm Atlas airs on its home station -

This special episode features a broad spectrum of traditional and modern music by American Indian and First Nations artists from all over North America in honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day. You'll hear two poem-songs by new U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo, as well as music by Samantha Crain, R. Carlos Nakai, a Cherokee Stomp Dance, Grammy-nominated group Young Fire, Jeremy Dutcher, Jim Pepper, and more.

The Rhythm Atlas 54: 2018-10-07 Indigenous Peoples' Day

In honor of Indigenous Peoples’ / Native American Day, this special episode of the program features a broad spectrum of musical styles from American Indian / First Nations artists of north America, as well as a few examples of folkloric music from central and south America.

Rhythm_atlas_logo_design_2_simple_500px_small You’ll hear two powerful poem-songs by Mvskoke poet Joy Harjo, Samantha Crain singing her beautiful song "Red Sky, Blue Mountain" in Choctaw, the cedar flute playing of R. Carlos Nakai, a traditional Diné (Navajo) corn grinding song, the distinctive wooden flute and pan pipe sounds of the Andes by Bolivia’s Los Ruphay, contemporary Powwow drumming by the group Blackfire, a vintage 1970s folk-rock song by the Innu band Groupe Folklorique Montaignais from Quebec Province, the cutting-edge tribal electronica of A Tribe Called Red from Ottawa with vocals by Santee Sioux poet John Trudell, and more.

The Rhythm Atlas 61: Hanukkah Music Special 2018-12-02

On this special edition of the weekly program, we’ll explore the many facets of Hanukkah music from around the world. We’ll hear some traditional klezmer tunes, several pieces from the new album 'Shimmering Lights' by Yale Strom's Broken Consort, songs from the Sephardic Jewish culture that has roots in Spain, and some festive modern takes by artists such as Pink Martini with Ari Shapiro, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Julie Silver, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, and Carole King. Many of the songs speak of the traditions associated with Hanukkah: gathering for parties with family and friends, lighting the candles on the menorah, and enjoying delicious food and drink. Also featured throughout the program are several spoken pieces from the wonderful album 'Oy Chanukah!' In these pieces we hear about Hanukkah traditions and reminiscences of Hanukkah celebrations from the early twentieth century by elders in the Jewish community. It's an eclectic mix of Hanukkah music with a little something for everyone.
