Owsley Stanley Foundation tells us about their new Johnny Cash release which was recorded by a Grateful Dead legend.

Official-tapes-v3-1_small

Beyond Description. . .

We check in with the Owsley Stanley Foundation!

The band's latest box set "Listen To The River: St. Louis '71 '72 '73" includes 7 previously unreleased Grateful Dead shows. Three of those shows were recorded by Owsley Stanley a/k/a Bear.

The Owsley Foundation restores recordings - just like the St. Louis tapes - with the hopes of officially releasing the performances. Their latest release is Johnny Cash at The Carousel Ballroom. The venue was operated by members of the Grateful Dead and the soundman was Bear. Directors from the Foundation tell us about these recordings and how the Man In Black influenced the Grateful Dead.

The archival release - a three-CD live album consisting of 23 tracks and clocking in at over 3 hours long - is a Baltimore show from May of 1977.

Off The Wall / Off The Charts. . .

- Debuts at No. 2 on Top Album Sales, tying for the act’s highest-rank on the 31-year-old chart.
- The band hit No. 2 five times previously, all with Dave’s Picks efforts. The Grateful Dead has now placed 101 different collections onto the Top Album Sales chart, with the vast majority of them being live efforts.

- On the Billboard 200 chart, Dave’s Picks, Vol. 41 debuts at No. 13 – tying for the Grateful Dead’s highest debut ever (matching the No. 13 debut and peak of Dave’s Picks, Vol. 40 last year). The band last went higher on the Billboard 200 with 1987’s In the Dark, when it peaked at No. 6 (Aug. 22, 1987-dated chart).

- It earns the band its 110th career entry on the Billboard 200, extending its record for the most among groups.

- Dave’s Picks, Vol. 41 also marks Grateful Dead’s 51st top 40-charting album on the Billboard 200. The band continues to have the most top 40 albums among groups since the chart began regularly publishing on a weekly basis in 1956. The acts with the most top 40 albums on the Billboard 200 are: Frank Sinatra (58), Elvis Presley (57), Barbra Streisand (54), Bob Dylan and Grateful Dead (51 each). Tribute to Tech whiz - Rick Turner

Official-tapes-v3-1_small

Beyond Description. .  .

We get pumped for Dave's Picks 42! We hear music from the same run of shows at the Winterland in '74.

The Jerry Garcia vault has been opened once again for GarciaLive Volume 18: November 2nd, 1974 Keystone Berkeley, a live archival release featuring the full, two-set Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders concert. GarciaLive Volume 18 is due out June 10.

Rick Turner joined the Great Jam In The Sky. .  .
Turner got his start with the Dead by inlaying one of Phil Lesh’s bass guitars. He traveled with the band on several tours, innovating concert sound by placing the PA system behind the band — this approach evolved into the Wall of Sound.
The PA system had McIntosh power amps pushing 125,000 watts through 450 drivers. It was the largest sound system at the time – about three stories high, and was noted for its engineering breakthroughs that promised to project an acceptable quality of sound for more than 400 meters.Turner said he walked a mile away from the Wall of Sound and the sound remained perfect. “People, to this day, will say it’s the best live sound they’ve ever heard.”

Premiere Guitar magazine dubbed him as “the father of boutique guitar building.” His designs often blurred the distinction between guitar making and art. Jerry's Pretzel Guitar was one such design, and was exhibited in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and New York City’s Museum of Art and Design. Rick Turner worked with Fleetwood Mac's bassist John McVie, which led to the work with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. Turner would often serve as Buckingham’s guitar tech during the band’s Rumours sessions.

In 1978, Turner began work on the Model 1 – an instrument that has become trademark with Buckingham and his unique fingerpicking style of playing. After appraising the initial plans, Buckingham registered his interest to buy the first one off the line, and a year later had one in his possession. If Buckingham’s new guitar didn’t exactly make Turner a household name like Gibson or Fender, it certainly piqued the interest of guitarists around the world, and Turner’s shop was off and strumming.

In 1988 he served as President of Gibson Guitars Labs’ West Coast Research and Development division.

Turner has worked with Jackson Browne, David Crosby, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, and John Mayer.

Rick Turner joined the Great Jam In The Sky at the age of 78 on April 17th

A book about the band's official releases and interview with the author

Official-tapes-v3-1_small We talk with author, John Kilbride, who just wrote "The Golden Road: The Recorded History of the Grateful Dead." The book follows the history of the band with their official releases. With a reputation built on the band's stellar live performances, it was only in their later years and after the death of their iconic frontman Jerry Garcia, that they began the release of over 100 recordings from their vaults that documented the magic they produced on stage. This book charts the history of the band through these hundreds of releases, as well as their studio recordings and their key solo albums, that show what made this pioneering band unique.

Two releases have been announced highlighting two different eras in the band's history

Official-tapes-v3-1_small

David Grisman, Jerry Garcia's old bluegrass buddy, came out with his first volume of collected original compositions written between 1963 and 1975. These performances were selected by the composer and include eight previously unissued tracks. We hear the track that includes Jerry on banjo!

In 2018, the album: Before The Dead showcased a rare collection of the earliest known folk and bluegrass performances by Jerry Garcia. We talk with the producer of the album and Jerry's bluegrass projects.

The Grateful Dead have announced a 17-CD limited edition set that features six previously unreleased concerts recorded in New York City at Madison Square Garden between 1981 and 1983. "IN AND OUT OF THE GARDEN: MADISON SQUARE GARDEN ’81, ’82, ’83" is set for release in September.

John Kilbride, author of "The Golden Road: The Recorded History of the Grateful Dead," talks about how this release is unique because the box set highlights early 80's shows. A period that is not well represented with official release.

The band also announced: Dave's Picks volume 43. In August, we'll get two virtually complete performances from San Francisco 11/2/69, Live At Family Dog At The Great Highway, and from Dallas 12/26/69, McFarlin Auditorium.

The latest release: Dave's Picks Vol. 43, two “virtually complete performances” from 1969. We hear an acoustic track taken from an acoustic set because one of the drummers' missed his plane. . .

Drummer, Mickey Hart, revives his Planet Drum percussion collective for "In The Groove," the group’s first new album since 2007’s Global Drum Project. Planet Drum made its self-titled debut in 1991. The album won the first-ever Grammy for Best World Music Album, and went on to spend 26 weeks at the top of the Billboard World Music chart.

Beyond Description. . .

On August 27, 1972, fresh off their now-legendary European tour, the Grateful Dead traveled to Veneta, Oregon and reunited with the Merry Pranksters to throw a benefit concert for the Kesey family's Springfield Creamery. The show became the most-requested live show in Grateful Dead history.

The concert which is considered to be the Merry Pranksters last "Acid Test" offers a snapshot of the band at the peak of its playing prowess.
Fans looking to jam with the Grateful Dead or listen to and mix isolated band member tracks can do so with the new "Playing In The Band" interactive experience on Dead.net. Five songs from the band’s legendary August 27, 1972 Sunshine Daydream concert at Old Renaissance Faire Grounds in Veneta, Oregon are available on the tool.

The "Playing In The Band" interactive experience lays out a mixer with the ability to adjust the volume for channels featuring Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir’s guitars, Phil Lesh’s bass, Bill Kreutzmann’s drums and Keith Godchaux’s keyboards as well as one for the vocals.

The Chieftains started their journey in Ireland in 1962. Since then they have won six Grammy Awards and are highly recognized for reinventing traditional Irish music on a contemporary and international scale. On their first U.S. tour, Jerry Garcia invited The Chieftains to open for his bluegrass band, Old & In The Way. The evening presented the perfect pairing of Irish traditional music, and its cousin, American bluegrass. The shows were recorded by Grateful Dead soundman, Owsley Stanley. The Old And In The Way recording was released in 1975 and became one of the best-selling bluegrass albums of all-time. Recently, The Chieftain's recording has been released with the Owsley Stanley Foundation.

Beyond Description. . .

Most Grateful Dead shows from 1971 to 1995 have been recorded. However, there is one show where there isn't a recording!? No recording from the soundboard. No audience recording. What's even more crazy - the show took place in 1979 - when shows were commonly recorded.

We talk with author / artist, Mark A. Rodriguez, who just released a book: "After All is Said and Done: Taping the Grateful Dead, 1965-1995." He talks about his "Dead Tape Collector" project where he is trying to get a recording of all the Grateful Dead shows. From his research, he needs about another 160 tapes (shows).
