Each week, KBEM features another teacher from the Minneapolis public school system who is actively making a different in the lives of children.  Stephanie Morseth  teaches exceptional children in unique ways, giving them an opportunity to act out lessons they are currently learning.  

Doug Beumer and Ian Wells are teachers who use the "Go Green" Concept in their classrooms to teach students.  Each week KBEM Radio features another teacher who is doing great things with the students.  Hear how they use worms to help teach "Go green"!

Each week, KBEM radio features another teacher from the Minneapolis Public School system.  This weeks teacher feature is Charlita Williamson.  She coaches Girls basketball and track for high school boys and girls.  She is the recipient of the Breaking Barriers Award for her achievements as a coach.  She makes it clear that the students' grades need to be C average and higher in order to be on a team.  She inspires them to do so.

Dan Mcguire teaches 3rd and 4th grade at Marcy High School.  He utilizes a software program called "Moodle".   He explains in this interview.

David Sylvestre is a teacher at Henry High.  He teaches Career and Tech Education.  Also digital audio and video.
 

KBEM'S TEACHER FEATURE this week is Paul Sommers.  Paul teaches history at Susan B. Anthony School.

She is an administrator and an educator, overseeing the programs with the aim of increasing the achievement of American Indian Students.  Currently, we have 1800 Indian Students in the school system.

This week, we feature Tim Martin, music director at Washburn High School.  We featured Tim before, but now he has moved from North High School, where he taught both choral and band music, and is currently with Washburn HS.   He speaks about the importance of having a band program where when jazz is played in band, a station like KBEM and the singers and musicians from the Twin Cities help to make it a cohesive learning environment.

Butch Thompson's Piano Bench Show looks at the piano styling of Jimmy Yancey, pianist from Chicago at the turn of the 20th century. He was a self taught pianist and was considered a Child Prodigy. He was known for his blues piano playing.

Minnesota Music Moment is a weekly feature of KBEM FM 88.5, each week highlighting a different musician or vocalist. This MMM features pianist Bryan Nichols.

Rick Carlson is featured on this segment of Minnesota Music Moment.  He is a well known Twin Cities Pianist who began his musical adventure at age 8, being taught trumpet from his father.  He very quickly turned to piano on his father's request, and fell in love with that instrument.  He has been a mainstay in the Twin Cities for many years, being the featured pianist for the Wolverines.  

Each week, KBEM radio feature another teacher from the Minneapolis Public School System.   This segment features Shirley Poelstra, a Career Experience Coordinator at Thomas Edison High School, who recently received the Junior Achievement Teacher of the Year Award on . Last spring, Shirley led Edison's Junior Achievement students in starting their own company by developing, marketing and selling an international cookbook. They partnered with Best Buy company to make this happen. All of their time and hard work paid off for they took fourth place this summer in the Junior Achievement National Competition of the Year that was held in Minneapolis.  

Each week, KBEM Radio features a different teacher from the Minneapolis Public School System.  This segment's Teacher Feature is Kate Rosok, a Science Teacher at Thomas Edison High School.  Kate is the recipient of the "Outstanding Earth Science Teacher Award for 2010", awarded by the National Association of GeoScience Teachers.  She will receive her award in February of 2011 at the METSA Conference.

KBEM radio features Minnesota Music Moment, which focuses on Twin Cities Jazz artists.  This segment features Dan Frankowsk of the group "Frankhouse".

Marlene began  teaching 9 years ago in Brooklyn, New York when she joined the New York City Teaching Fellows Program as a change agent for public education.

Each week, KBEM radio features a teacher from the Minneapolis Public School System.  This time, we feature Stacey Kilton, Vocal Music Teacher at Thomas Edison High School.  Stacey teaches choir, dance a guitar to her students. She has a B.A. in music education and vocal performance from Ithaca College.  Not only does she teach in the class room, but also teaches private lessons and has played in may different bands through out the years.

Viva City Festival of the Arts, was initiated thirteen years ago as a way to showcase arts education in Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS). It is a district-wide event, made possible by high quality programs and the extra voluntary efforts of fine arts teachers. This is the musical portion of the Festival, taking place at Ted Mann Concert Hall at the University of Minnesota.
This Viva City Annual Concert performance features middle and high school students frome the Minneapolis Public Schools.  It was hosted by singer/actor T. Michael Rambo.  The concert also features performances by J.D Steele and Charmin Michele and interviews with the band directors and workshop instructors, Judi Donaghy and Kevin Washington.  Community leaders Pam Costain and the Honorable Mayor of Minneapolist, R.T. Rybak, all join us for a showcase of talented band students from all across the Minneapolis Public Schools for a night of Jazz at Viva City.

Each week, KBEM Radio features another teacher from the Mineapolis Public School System. This week, our feature is Joan Franks, Principal at Armatage Montessori School in Minneapolis.  She was selected as the Minnesota National Distinguished Principal.  The NDP was established in 984 to honor exemplary elementary and middle school principals who set the pace, character and quality of education  children receive during their early school years.  

Each week, KBEM Radio features another person from the Minneapolis Public School System.  This week's teacher feature is Rachel Dischinger, Career and College Center Coordinator for Achieve Minneapolis.  She helps  students at Menlo Park, American Indian IOC, and PYC Arts and Tech High school learn about their best career and college options.  She speaks about a video her students created that will help with the transition from high school into college. 

Harry Woods is one of those popular song writers whose works are condiserably better known to the masses, than the composer is himself.  No "Household Word" is Mr Woods, yet to those who make a study of the "Great American Songbook", Harry  Woods is a familiar and highly esteemed figure. If he had only just written the American Classic "Side By Side" alone, he'd be a rich man, but Woods was also responisible for such works as I'M LOOKING OVER A FOUR LEAF CLOVER-JUST AN ECHO IN THE VALLEY-RIVER STAY 'WAY FROM MY DOOR, and I'LL NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN. In this selection, "WHAT A LITTLE MOON LIGHT CAN DO", became a jazz standard and a favorite in the Billie Holiday songbook. Here to deliver this "Certain Standard" is Minnesota's Voice, Connie Evingson.

In the Spring of 2010, the South Jazz program was approached about hosting their own radio show on KBEM-FM, 88.5 FM.  After discussion of process and concept, South agreed to take on this new challenge.  Beginning in the Fall of 2010, the show's executive producer, Robert Hayles, and the show's producer and South Band Director, Scott Carter, started to work with South Jazz to create a brand new radio show to be aired on Jazz 88.

It was decided that the South High Jazz Combo would serve as the hosts and musical directors.  They would also decide on the themes and record themselves performing songs for each of their 13 installments of JAZZ AT SOUTH HIGH  that will start airing in January of 2011. 

JAZZ AT SOUTH HIGH  will feature music from past and present South High Jazz Ensembles and brand new recordings by the South High Jazz Combo.  Each week's show will feature never before heard performances of the South High Jazz Combo that are recorded at South High.
