The music is served "shaken, not stirred" every week on The Retro Cocktail Hour. Here you'll find vintage recordings from the dawn of the Hi-Fi Era - imaginative, light-hearted (and sometimes light headed) pop stylings designed to underscore everything from the backyard barbecue to the high-tech bachelor pad.
Among the artists featured on The Retro Cocktail Hour are lounge legends like Frank Sinatra and Juan Esquivel; tiki gods Martin Denny and Les Baxter; swinging cocktail combos featuring The Three Suns and Jack "Mr. Bongo" Costanzo; and mambo king Perez Prado. The series also spotlights up and coming lounge/exotica artists, including the Waitiki 7, Ixtahuele, the Tikiyaki Orchestra, Big Kahuna and the Copa Cat Pack, the Voodoo Organist and many more.
Each hour of the show is discrete and can be used in a variety of ways - a weekly two-hour show; a weekly one-hour show; or twice weekly one-hour shows. Custom promos and fundraising pitches available on request. Just email host@retrococktail.org for details.
Join host Darrell Brogdon at the underground martini bunker for the sounds of space age pop and incredibly strange music!

Going retro: the art of hatmaking
From KALW | 08:00
San Francisco may not be known for its fashion, but it’s certainly a fashionable city – the item of the day might be a bulky scarf or skinny jeans, but in the first half of the 20th century and earlier, San Franciscans were really into hats.
Streets were often a sea of hats: rounded bowlers and their flatter cousins, the porkpies, creased fedoras, tall top hats, wide-brimmed ladies’ hats ornamented with flowers and birds.
Today, though, the hat’s popularity is a shadow of what it once. And local hatters and milliners that once ran thriving businesses from their trade have all but disappeared. If you do see hats milling about town these days, most likely they’re mass-produced in factories overseas.
But there’s at least one place where the local hat-making tradition goes on – behind a nearly 100-year-old storefront in the Richmond District. KALW’s Ali Budner visited Paul’s Hat Works, an old-fashioned men’s hat shop, to meet the four young women who have taken up this almost forgotten trade.

Retro Product Proves Recession Proof

A family business named Sarah's Hat Boxes is surviving the Great Recession, despite selling a product more befitting an era defined by the Great Depression.

INTRO: Few products are selling in this economy. Sure, iPhones are still moving. But for a lot of companies, innovation and I-P-Os have been sidetracked by cost cutting and layoffs. That’s part of what makes the survival of a company named ‘Sarah's Hat Boxes’ so unique. Based in Hancock, New Hampshire, their up-scale hat boxes seem more appropriate for an era defined by the Great Depression, rather than the Great Recession.
