Playlist: Classic Hits & Noncom Mix

Compiled By: Joyride Media

 Credit:

A sampler of Joyride Media radio specials suitable for both Classic Hits and Eclectic noncom formats, featuring legendary artists heard on a wide range of stations every day - Paul Simon, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Roy Orbison and more.

Playlist includes examples of one-hour shows that work for all formats, as well as multi-part series that can be aired in full or as any individual segment(s) that work best for any particular station.

THE BYRDS: Two Part Series

A great example of how to split music playlists of a classic band in two parts to give stations more scheduling flexibility based on the music they play. Many stations aired their choice of the two parts to focus on either the early hits or the later cosmic country/rock, while others ran both to tell the full story.

The Byrds (part 1): There is a Season

From Joyride Media | Part of the The Byrds: There is a Season / Farther Along series | 59:05

The first of two one-hour documentaries on The Byrds, covering 1964 to 1967: the hitmaking years of the band's original five members.

Tambourine_small The first of two one-hour documentaries on The Byrds, the continuously groundbreaking band who bridged the gaps between The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, the Beach Boys, the Los Angeles psychedelic underground and classic country. Their memorable music set the stage for everyone from the Eagles to Tom Petty to R.E.M. Each hour is hosted by singer-songwriter Laura Cantrell, and covers a distinct period of their prolific history that can either be aired as one two-part series, or as your choice of two insightful one-hour programs.

THERE IS A SEASON covers 1964-1967, the all-too-brief hitmaking years of the Byrds' original five members - Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke. They were an electrified folk band who topped the charts with some of the decades' most innovative singles and albums. By 1967, their musical harmony was engulfed by the off-stage disharmony that pushed them to reach those heights. Instead of being directed by the singular vision of one leader, The Byrds were consistently led by everybody's contributions - from their original five members to the musicians involved with their later years.

Despite the inner turmoil that resulted in a revolving cast of characters, the Byrds always used those changes as opportunities to further their musical evolution. "They all brought something new and something defining," says journalist David Fricke, "and it all became part of the Byrds sound. They didn't change the Byrds to the degree that it changed the sound. What they did became the Byrds."

Both segments feature the wide range of music that made The Byrds of the 60s most influential bands, along with comments by its two longest-lasting members: Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman. Writers David Fricke, Anthony DeCurtis, Lenny Kaye and Byrds historian Sid Griffin are also interviewed.

The Byrds (part 2): Farther Along

From Joyride Media | Part of the The Byrds: There is a Season / Farther Along series | 59:05

The Second of two one-hour documentaries on The Byrds, covering 1968 to 1972: the groundbreaking country-rock years.

Unissued_small The second of two one-hour documentaries on The Byrds, the continuously groundbreaking band who bridged the gaps between The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, the Beach Boys, the Los Angeles psychedelic underground and classic country. Each hour is hosted by singer-songwriter Laura Cantrell, and covers a distinct period of their prolific history that can either be aired as one two-part series, or as your choice of two insightful one-hour programs. FARTHER ALONG picks up the story in 1968 and details how the Byrds' legendary Act I was followed by one of rock history's most fascinating second acts. Despite their lower record sales, the Byrds' later incarnations alternately defined and re-defined "country-rock," thanks to the influential contributions by folks like Gram Parsons and guitarist Clarence White. As with the first segment, FARTHER ALONG feature the wide range of music that made The Byrds of the 60s most influential bands, along with comments by its two longest-lasting members: Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman. Writers David Fricke, Anthony DeCurtis, Lenny Kaye and Byrds historian Sid Griffin are also interviewed. Instead of being directed by the singular vision of one leader, The Byrds were consistently led by everybody's contributions - from their original five members to the musicians involved with their later years. "They all brought something new and something defining," says journalist David Fricke, "and it all became part of the Byrds sound. They didn?t change the Byrds to the degree that it changed the sound. What they did became the Byrds." Broadcast Window: Begins late September 2006, available for all USA radio broadcasters at no cost. 9/30 update: In addition to the 0:59 version posted on the audio page, there is also a 0:54 "news-hole" show in two parts - a 1:00 billboard and the 53:00 program.

DYLAN: Four Part Series

Dylan's career also splits conveniently in multiple chronological parts so different radio formats can run the full thing or pick & choose what parts work best for them. In LA station terms, "BLOWIN" is KPFK for the early folk period, "ROLLING" is KRTH, "SHELTER" is KLOS, and "MERCY" is KCRW/KCSN. But any of the stations could probably run the whole thing.

DYLAN: BLOWIN' IN THE WIND

From Joyride Media | Part of the DYLAN series | 59:00

Patti Smith hosts this hour of Bob Dylan music and conversation covering 1961-1964.

Bddylancover_small Bob Dylan moved to New York City in 1961, and within two years he was being lauded as the "voice of a generation." The young troubadour wasn't so interested in being that, but Dylan's meteoric rise to fame was no fluke. In his songs, Dylan captured the social consciousness of the time and took it beyond as he rejected the role of protest singer. In this hour, we'll hear about Dylan's early years as he moved from folk singer-songwriter to rock and roll star. Interviews: Bob Neuwirth, Ray Benson, George Wein, John Hammond, Suze Rotolo, David Nelson, Tom Morello, Dave Van Ronk, Bill Flanagan, Rush Rehm, Sean Wilentz, John Cohen, Greil Marcus, Anthony DeCurtis

DYLAN: LIKE A ROLLING STONE

From Joyride Media | Part of the DYLAN series | 59:00

Patti Smith hosts this hour of Bob Dylan music and conversation covering 1965-1974

Bddylancover_small With the mantle of folk protest singer off his shoulders, Bob Dylan launched into a flurry of creativity in the mid-1960's. His sound exploded with electric instruments and a blend of folk, rock, blues, and gospel influences. By the late 60's, Dylan was singing country music like he had grown up in Nashville. His lyrics still commented on the world, but through a wider lens that mixed personal reflection with mystical and surreal images. In this hour, we'll hear how Dylan found his own unique voice, and how that changed rock and roll for a long time to come. Interviews: Sean Wilentz, George Wein, Roger McGuinn, Anthony DeCurtis, Greil Marcus, John Hiatt, John Cohen, Ray Benson, Josh Ritter, Bill Flanagan, Garth Hudson

From Joyride Media | Part of the DYLAN series | 59:00

Patti Smith hosts this hour of Bob Dylan music and conversation covering 1974-1989

Bddylancover_small In the 1970's and 80's, Bob Dylan continued to expand his artistic world. His songs ran the gamut, from very personal stories to Homeric epics and everything in-between. By the late 70's, Dylan became a born-again Christian, and for several years he sang only religious material. By the late 80's, Dylan had supported Live Aid, Farm Aid, and joined the Traveling Wilburys. In this hour, we'll hear highlights from this period of dizzying artistic and personal growth. Interviews: Bill Flanagan, Roger McGuinn, David Mansfield, Ray Benson, Ian McLagan, David Gans

DYLAN: OH MERCY

From Joyride Media | Part of the DYLAN series | 59:00

Patti Smith hosts this hour of Bob Dylan music and conversation covering 1989 to the present

Bddylancover_small Bob Dylan has always been a unique American voice, and that's most evident in the music he's made since the late 1980's. Returning to his roots in folk and blues, Dylan has fine-tuned American music with the mind of a poet and the bravado of a rock and roller. In this hour, we'll hear the maturity and grace of Dylan's most recent artistic ideas. Interviews: David Kemper, Ray Benson, David Gans, Bill Flanagan, Carolyn Wonderland, Josh Ritter, Ian MacLagen, John Hiatt, Roger McGuinn, John Cohen.

Dennis Wilson: Pacific Ocean Blue

From Joyride Media | 59:00

Exploration of Dennis Wilson's solo album "Pacific Ocean Blue" and rare, unreleased "Bambu" sessions.

Picture1_small DENNIS WILSON - PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE In 1977 Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue became the first solo LP to be released by a member of the legendary Beach Boys. Dennis, the band's surfer, drummer and free spirit, emerged from the shadow of his older brother, pop genius Brian Wilson, and shocked everyone with a sound and style unlike any other. More than 30 years later, it stands as one of the 1970s great cult-classic albums and a crucial puzzle-piece in the Wilson family's long musical history.

Throughout this one-hour special, Dennis Wilson's friends and family recall how he developed his musical voice - one that was full of surprises, but also one that reflected Wilson's dark, moody life. While acclaim grew for both his Beach Boys contributions and his solo material, Wilson's creative output was sadly stifled by his hard and fast lifestyle. His plans to follow Pacific Ocean Blue with an even grander album, Bambu, were left unfinished at the time of his drowning death in 1983, but many songs from those last sessions were filled with a hopefulness that belied his tragic decline.

Interview subjects include Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson's first wife, Carole Bloom, former Beach Boys manager Jim Guercio, Pacific Ocean Blue co-producer Gregg Jakobson, and engineer Jon Hanlon, Bambu collaborator Carli Munoz, and journalist Anthony DeCurtis. We also hear from Dennis Wilson, himself, courtesy of a rare radio visit at the time Pacific Ocean Blue was released. Many tracks from that album, as well as the long lost Bambu sessions are heard throughout this one-hour program hosted by noted rock historian and Smithereens drummer Dennis Diken.
