wow, I listen to Franti's music but didn't know of the roots. Stumbled across this piece when searching for black history month material, and this really makes it. Live, rockin', informative!
I don't know Franti's work and still, this appeals to the side of me that's just plain nosey - it's a brief entry into the head of a thoughtful musician and what his influences are. Learned some new bits about other famous musicians so it keeps your ear cocked. Easy conversation with the host who's listening closely.
This interview provides an informative context for Franti's music and inspiration. I'm not sure if Michael Franti is well known, but both he and his band definitely should be. Their songs are ecclectic--a little soul, a little funk. In any case, this little interview is a snapshot of the influences that create some really powerful music.
