Very good piece, collected and conceived and fashioned together by a real pro with a long track record of work that is anything but ordinary. It’s a bit from the Michael Moore school in the sense of – you have something you want to say, and you work around that piece of dirt until you have your pearl. This piece is essentially comedy – but like all great comedy it’s dead on true and therefore deadly serious. (PS Karen Michel was doing her thing long before any of us had heard of MM. And then there’s the totally unbalanced Harry Shearer, whose podcast I never miss.) Was this piece censored? Surely. If I concentrate I can just channel the discussion that went on about pride in “balanced reporting.” The USA is, I think, the only country that holds to the dream that its media is balanced. I don’t think it’s working anymore. It’s broke. Someone fix it! In the meantime, I’m sure this piece can find a home in many places. Put some more out there, KM.
as soon as they let me i'm putting this baby on the air. while it's keyed to the last GOP convention in NYC, it's themes are timeless and the commentary is so subtle you might think some will miss it, but that's exactly the attraction of karen's work. don't miss out!

The subject matter is probably more "adult" than most NPR reports, but the sexual and political themes are treated with the utmost journalistic professionalism and objectivity. There's no attempt made to shock listeners on either side of our country's political divide.
Air this piece right now. Especially now. Can't believe it hasn't aired anywhere. Producer Karen Michel has created a provocative, sound-rich report on the sexual habits of Republicans during the convention. Not exactly scandalous but it isn't what you normally hear about conservatives though hey please this shouldn't be a surprise. Michel went to several sex clubs - amazing - and got people to talk - even more amazing! There is an NPR news tag on the story which would need to be cut to air locally. So stations might cut out the Outcue and back announce the producer credit. This is fun, upbeat and makes you ponder. Might be an unsual way to balance all the pro-Bush victory rhetoric on mainstream media now.
