OUR STORY:
AIR was founded in 1988 by a group of ten independent producers sitting around a kitchen table on Murray Street in NYC. The organization has since grown into a global social and professional network of 1200+ producers and creatives representing an extensive range of disciplines. AIR members, or "AIRsters," are news journalists and reporters, sound artists, station station-based producers, podcasters, gearheads, media activists, and more. The medium of sound is what unites our membership but we are platform-agnostic. AIR’s members are rapidly diversifying and expanding their craft as they cut new edges in digital, public media, podcasting and beyond.
AIR is the primary advocate for producers in public and commercial media and its training programs have helped hone the technical, editorial, and strategic skills of hundreds of media professionals. The AIRdaily, a 24x7 discussion forum, is a daily destination for hundreds of members who interact online each day, and AIRsters continually remind us that the most significant benefit of belonging to AIR is the intangible feeling of community they experience through the AIRdaily, mingles, and other AIR initiatives that bring our members together across the world. Starting in 2010 with 3 iterations over 7 years, AIR's incubator Localore matches winning talent with stations and deploys them up to 12 months to invent new audiences and pathways for engagement with public media. AIR’s producers work with community partners, storytellers, and contributors to invent new, blended media models and produce live, broadcast, and digital stories.
