KCME 88.7 FM is an independent public radio station that broadcasts classical music and jazz twenty-four hours a day. Founded in 1977, KCME's studios were located in a small house near a babbling creek in Manitou Springs, Colorado. Over the years, KCME has grown to the point where it now broadcasts its signal over a much wider area from its transmitter high atop Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado Springs. With translators serving Cañon City / Florence (91.1 FM), Manitou Springs (90.9 FM), Salida (89.5 FM), and Cripple Creek / Victor (89.5 FM), KCME has expanded its services to other communities who have expressed a desire to hear KCME. By satellite transmission, KCME's signal is heard in mountainous areas that would otherwise be difficult to reach and, in the future, KCME expects to broadcast to additional communities. The added ability to broadcast its signal over the internet means that KCME may now be heard literally anywhere in the world. With its studios now located in Colorado Springs, KCME's operating revenues are derived from membership drives and from the sale of on-air underwriting to community-minded businesses, thus assuring that a hundred percent of its support comes from the community it serves.
