WPPB is Long Island's only locally owned and operated NPR station. Located on the  East End of Long Island, it serves the prestigious Hamptons and the southern shoreline of Connecticut. Peconic Public Broadcasting successfully aquired the license to operate 88.3 FM from Long Island University in Southampton, New York in December 2010 and is now a community licensee. The Hamptons is a full or part -time home for many of the wealthiest and most influential people in the world; a world renowned art, music, entertainment and writing community; two Native American Communities; a large immigrant community serving the farming and landscape businesses and an active community of farmers and  fishermen. WPPB provides an alternative public radio format to a community with NPR service from Connecticut based stations. The format is primarily locally produced music and talk programs.  The daily music is ecelctic based in Americana, Blues, Jazz , and a significant amountv of live perfomances by nationally known singer songwriters who live on Long Island. We also provide exclusive broadcasts of the Metropolitan Operaand New York Philharmonic. Our local news is limited at this time as a result of the transition to new ownership but we will restore it, in time,  with a new team that will continue  the tradition of winning the majority of awards for local radio news /features from AP and the Long Island Press Association. The Long Island Market is an ideal public radio market and as an independent community owned station, WPPB is positioned to add an important new presence for public radio in a highly desireable public radio market.
