ClassicalWorks was born of the idea that stations with tight budgets should have access to high-quality classical music programming through the night at minimal cost, freeing up financial resources stations can use to invest more heavily in key daytime hours. It is competitively priced on a per-hour basis (a minimum hour requirement applies), so even though 12 hours of programming are available per day, stations only pay for the hours they use. It is also designed to minimize work for carriage stations, as ClassicalWorks will provide, free of charge, custom station IDs, liners, promos, and fundraising messages upon request. Playlists between 10 pm and 10 am Eastern Time will feed automatically through NPR’s Composer 2.

ClassicalWorks also believes that classical music should be fun, accessible, and relevant. Musical selections cover a wide range of periods and styles, from the occasional piece from Medieval or early renaissance times, to contemporary music from the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Most hours contain an “essential” piece of classical music that is well-known and easily recognizable.

ClassicalWorks hours are structured with flexibility in mind. Each hour contains 59 minutes of content with an optional 5 minute news hole from :01 - :06 past the hour, and an optional music bed to go between the two main segments. We urge stations to put something in between Segments 3 and 5 to ensure proper continuity of announcing, even if the provided music beds are not used. Stations are responsible for providing content from 59:00 to the top of the hour.
