Expand Your Mind on a Minute (or so) a Day!

Your Philosophy Minute consists of brief modules of philosophy (90-120 seconds each), with each module presenting some interesting or controversial philosophical idea, movement, or argument, or a brief intellectual biography of some famous thinkers.

Like the many programs that serve as its model, the modules are well suited to air once or twice a week either at specific scheduled times or else provide a transition between other programs when such would be useful or necessary. In a typical spot the host might present arguments for some interesting or controversial philosophical thesis: that we can’t know if the world exists outside our mind, that we do or do not have free will, that it’s morally wrong to go to the movies, that God does or does not exist, etc. In other spots the host might present brief intellectual biographies of famous philosophers (Socrates, Aquinas, Descartes, etc.) or summaries of important and interesting philosophical concepts and movements (“idealism,” “anti-realism,” “postmodernism,” etc.). Currently a half-dozen spots are posted, but dozens more are available.

Andrew Pessin is Chair of the Philosophy Department at Connecticut College, author of numerous academic articles and books, and is publishing in 2009 two philosophy books aimed at the general educated reader: "The God Question: What Famous Thinkers From Plato to Dawkins Have Said About God" (Oneworld) and "The 60-Second Philosopher: Expand Your Mind on a Minute or so A Day!"
