California Dream, Undocumented

From Capital Public Radio | Part of the The View From Here series | 53:58

More than 3 million unauthorized immigrants live in California. This one-hour documentary tells stories of three immigrants from Mexico: a working father of three, a dental school grad student and a man whose gay marriage led to permanent resident status. Despite lack of legal status and without a path to citizenship, they are making lives for themselves and their families.

Lauraaguilar_small This hour-long documentary combines three first-person stories of undocumented Californians with commentary and context by Sacramento State Assistant Professor Heidy Sarabia. It's narrated by CapRadio Reporter Julia Mitric.

The first story won First Place in PRNDI's 2016 Short Doc competition.

UNDOCUMENTED STUDENT 'FEELS LIKE AN AMERICAN GIRL'
Many undocumented Millennials in California expect to go to college, and new laws make it possible. Laura Aguilar has been admitted to grad school, and hopes to be a dentist in four years, but she worries her immigrant status may still limit her.

NAVIGATING LIFE AND LOVE WHEN ONE PARENT IS UNDOCUMENTED
Bernardo Martinez Cordova came to the U.S. illegally and quickly found a job. He also found romance with American citizen Kara Davis. The young couple must navigate between two worlds as they raise their family, despite the threat of deportation.

OUT OF THE SHADOWS AND INTO MARRIAGE
For immigrants seeking U.S. residency, marriage provides a clear pathway. Being undocumented makes it complicated. Being gay made it impossible, until recently. His marriage was the last step in Juan Morales' 24-year journey out of the shadows.
