The Elements of Praise

From Thomas Haller | 09:50

Educators and Psychologists agree that a key component to raising responsible children is praise. Yes, children do irritation, annoying, frustrating behaviors but they are not always misbehaving. There are times when they do what they are asked to do; they follow the rules or play together quietly or do their chore without being told. And when this happens parents know that it’s important to praise their kids. But what parents don’t realize is that the most commonly used form of praise has the potential to be harmful and can result in creating a praise junkie. Join Thomas and Valerie as they discuss the three types of praise.

Five Tips for Making Interfaith Relationships Work

From Thomas Haller | 09:59

There is a rapid rate of intermarriage among people of different faiths in the United States. Research indicates that approximately 50 percent of Jewish men and women marry a person of a different faith. Interfaith marriage usually occurs between one person who is Jewish and another who is Christian. However, there are increasing numbers of young Catholics and Protestants intermarrying as well. Generally, this is viewed as less difficult for the young couple because of a commonly shared theology and culture. Regardless of whether the couple is Jewish/Catholic or a Catholic/Protestant interfaith marriage can pose serious problems and create crises for the couple and their respective families. Listen in as Thomas and Valerie discuss the five tips for making interfaith marriages work.

Sizzurp, what’s a parent to do?

From Thomas Haller | 09:59

One of the biggest worries parents face is their child’s involvement with alcohol and drug use. Several months ago we were all concerned about bath salts. Today a new way to get high is sweeping across the hip hop world and right into our homes. It is called Sizzurp or Purple Drank or Lean. Sizzurp is a combination of cough syrup, sprite soda and jolly rancher candy. The active ingredient in the cough syrup is promethazine, an antihistamine that depresses the central nervous system and codeine, a pain reliever and respiratory depressant. Codeine is in the same family of drugs as heroin and morphine. This concoction that kids are drinking is highly addictive. It’s like using heroin without the needles. What can parents do to keep their kids away from this kind of stuff?

In just a little over a week hundreds of thousands of students in middle schools, high schools and colleges all across the country will take a vow of silence to bring attention to anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender bullying and harassment in schools. On Friday, April 19th students will have an opportunity to participate in the National Day of Silence. As I was discussing this day with my two children I thought about a parent who struggles with accepting homosexuality for whatever reason, whether it is for religious reasons, moral reasons or due to a lack of understanding. As a sexologist I want to give you five tips on to do as a parent when your child comes out to you.

5 Steps to Reducing Aggression in Children Right Now

From Thomas Haller | 09:59

This week marks the anniversary of the Virginia Tech shooting that happened on April 16, 2007 and the shooting at Columbine High School that took place on April 20, 1999. When you couple those two events with the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary almost four months ago, it is clear that more needs to be done to stop the violence. Since the Sandy Hook tragedy there has been over two thousand, two hundred and forty-five gun related deaths in our country. Lawmakers can establish gun regulations and back ground checks as a way to curb violence but the answer is not going to come from the White House. It is going to come from your house and mine. The most important step we can take is in how we parent our children and what we teach them about aggression and tolerance. Today I’m going to give you the five steps parents can take right now to reducing aggression in their children.

Teaching Kids How to Report Bullying

From Thomas Haller | 09:59

Many parents are aware of the serious problem of bullying. But many don’t realize that over 160,000 kids nationwide stay home from school every day because of bullying or that eighty percent of middle school boys admit to bullying someone in the past month. The issue of bullying will not go away unless it is addressed directly but many kids don’t report bullying behavior, sometimes out of fear and other times not wanting to be seen as the “snitch” to their peers. However, if kids don’t report than adults can’t assist. So we have to teach kids address a bullying problem and how to do report correctly.
