2046: The Myth of the 'Latino Vote', 11/13/2020

From Latino USA | Part of the Latino USA series | 53:59

The 2020 election once again proved that there’s no single “Latino vote.” We look at how President Trump increased his support among Latino voters in Florida.

A major lesson from the 2020 election is one that Latinos already know: The idea of a single “Latinx vote” is a myth. Latinos and Latinas throughout the United States draw from different histories that have shaped their different policy interests, ideologies, and personal experiences. President Trump won Florida, including nearly half of all Latinx-identifying voters in the state. But across the country in Arizona, grassroots groups led a wave of younger Latinx voters to flip the state blue for President-elect Joe Biden. In this episode of Latino USA, we take a closer look at the Latinx voters that made it out to the polls in these states and how they decided who to cast their critical votes for.

My Incarcerated Family

From City High Radio | 11:56

Samantha wants to know why so many people in her family have been incarcerated. Her mom tells her it's just "poor choices," but Sam isn't satisfied with that answer. She asks her county's public defender and members of her city's criminal justice reform unit what they think. Why do some people seem to make bad choices, and does prison teach them to make better ones?

The five minute version of this story won the New York Times student podcast contest in 2019.
