Northern Voices: Episode 43 - Shirley Nordrum 2 EPISODE

From Northern Community Radio - KAXE & KBXE, Minnesota | Part of the Northern Voices: Celebrating Ties to Minnesota's Northland series | 10:00

Today, I’m speaking with Shirley Nordrum. You might remember that I spoke with Shirley for Northern Voices a couple years ago, pre-pandemic. It feels like forever!

Though lots has changed since, Shirley is still communicating Native values related to the environment. She’s from the Red Lake Nation and lives on the Leech Lake Reservation. Shirley has spent her life committed to her community, working on ways to strengthen food systems for Ojibwe people in Northern Minnesota, particularly with the Leech Lake Band.

Shirley is a wealth of knowledge and has been recently recognized for her commitment to bold thinking and ideas in the region. She has been awarded a Bush Fellowship from the Bush Foundation, over the next two years, Shirley will build her capacity as a leader.

What really caught my eye is the area of leadership she wants to build on - Shirley will expand culturally relevant science courses for schools. That’s still in the works, though the foundation of the work extends from Shirley’s culture, ancestors, and wisdom.

Let’s hear from Shirley as she expands on the need for culturally relevant science education, and a bit of her own history in academia, and what she looks forward to one day when the curriculum is rolled out.

Northern Voices: Episode 41 - Dudley Edmondson EPISODE

From Northern Community Radio - KAXE & KBXE, Minnesota | Part of the Northern Voices: Celebrating Ties to Minnesota's Northland series | 10:00

I’m excited to share words from Northern Minnesota’s Dudley Edmondson. Dudley authored, “Black & Brown Faces in America’s Wild Places,” which features profiles of African Americans enjoying the outdoors, professionally or as a hobby. He creates films, he’s a public speaker, and he photographs nature.

Dudley chose to move to the Duluth area for the environment - for the woods and wildlife. The landscape of the north weaves together with his work and lifestyle. He’s currently working on a new project focusing on environmental justice for All.

Though I’ll only briefly touch on a few particulars of the project, what leads up to it is Dudley’s perspective and the history of the United States. The outdoors is for everyone. We are all affected by the future of the environment and climate, and solutions to current and future environmental issues require diversity and inclusion of voices and thought.

Northern Voices: Episode 40 - Wendy Savage EPISODE

From Northern Community Radio - KAXE & KBXE, Minnesota | Part of the Northern Voices: Celebrating Ties to Minnesota's Northland series | 10:00

Today, I’m talking to an artist who comes from a family of artists, with creative traditions that span from painting, to regalia, from beadwork to moccasin making. Wendy Savage (Fond du Lac Band) has spent years supporting the careers of other artists, she has created curriculum for schools about Native artwork, and has curated exhibits, and has spent lots of time researching and speaking and visiting elders in her community.

Wendy is quick to praise many artists and colleagues when we talk - I feel like I’m destined to go on many side-quests from talking with her. Plus she has decades of research under her belt, most done before the era of Google, so she’s a wealth of information. Today, I’m going to take some time to celebrate her and her work.

Northern Voices: Episode 36 - Courtney Kerns EPISODE

From Northern Community Radio - KAXE & KBXE, Minnesota | Part of the Northern Voices: Celebrating Ties to Minnesota's Northland series | 10:00

Today I’m staying in town, pretty close to home. Less than two miles from my house, I’m meeting an expert to talk about… bogs! See, I know bogs exist around town and around Northern MN, they always seemed kind of spooky and uninviting. But I’m ready for my mind to change!

Courtney Kerns is an ecologist! She’s been an educator, she’s worked for the DNR…. Now she contracts - helping homeowners learn more about the land they live on. So I met Courtney at a bog behind the community college here in Grand Rapids. Snow is still covering a lot of ground, but plenty is peaking through. So you’ll hear us crunching over the snow.

It’s right after lunch and we all gather in a large room with couches to relax on as Shirley Nordrum begins her presentation…

Shirley’s presentation is called Unintended Consequences. There are good intentions when it comes to taking care of our environment, but Shirley looks at ways that that has created unforeseen results.

From Northern Community Radio - KAXE & KBXE, Minnesota | Part of the Northern Voices: Celebrating Ties to Minnesota's Northland series | 10:00

Before we had to get used to the “new normal” due to the pandemic… I visited the Duluth Folk School… It’s been closed in recent weeks, but join me on this tour and you’ll see why lots of people are eager for it to re-open soon.

The Duluth Folks school is a great place to learn more about the traditions, sustainable practices and indigenous and ancestral ways of life of my neighbors…

Okay. Let’s transport ourselves back to mid-January. I’m running through the frigid Duluth winds, to get from my car to the inviting warmth of the Duluth Folk School.

It smells of coffee and other treats coming from the cafe on the first floor, the high ceilings above the seating area open and extend to a second floor just past the cafe. To my right as I enter the door is an indoor cabin, providing a bit a privacy from the large main room.

I order a hot tea and sit with my thoughts until the time come for me to meet with the director of the folk school. I can see why one would want to spend time here. Soft music comes from somewhere, the whole place looks meticulously crafted with various woods and that I hope to learn more about.

Today, I talk to Noreen Thomas, an organic farmer outside of Moorhead, MN, with Doubting Thomas Farms.

It’s the very beginning of March, and I’m in Callaway, MN at the Indigenous Farming Conference, hosted by the White Earth Land Recovery Project.

At this time, the COVID-19 pandemic is just starting to really take a foothold in the US, it’s the same weekend at the cancellation of SXSW. And I’m pretty sure that this conference will be my last large gathering for a while.

But I’m relaxed and hopeful as I see all the work people are doing in Northern Minnesota and around the country to ensure healthy local foods are available to their communities. But there are many unique ways in which they’re going about it, as well.
