Compiled By: Chuck Wolfe

Lean in to Life

Inspired by the book Lean In and by my three daughters and wife, I decided to dedicate the first Wednesdays of each month when I do my radio show to women, helping women advance in their careers and also to cope with the multiple demands from work and home. I hope the show attracts women of all ages as well as interested men who recognize that it is in their interests to be supportive and to help out. In this playlist I typically have women guests and invite others to call in with their comments and questions.

The show is part of my regularly hosted show "The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel and Control How You Feel" which is on WPKN, 89.5 FM in Connecticut or streaming at www.wpkn.org the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Wednesday of each month at 12 Noon Eastern Time.

The regular show is a call in whereby I help people who are finding challenges in their life that involve strong emotions. I use the Emotion Roadmap, a tool I created, to help them to cope more successfully. It is my dream that everyone listening to my show becomes more able to manage their own emotions and their emotional relationships with others.

Emotionally Leaning in to Life: A Program for Women with Women #2 Dr. Becky Stiles

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 35:43

I am featuring the series: Emotionally Leaning in to Life: A Program for Women with Women. I will talk to my guest, Dr. Rebecca Stiles (Becky) about her experience as a scientist and manager and as an active participant in advancing women into leadership. This is the second show of the series which is on the first Wednesday of each month, 12-1 PM ET. Becky discusses her background, the importance of a foundation of self esteem, role models, mentors, a life partner who is willing to share all aspects of parenthood and home life responsibilities, work life balance and she shares insights gleaned from Sheryl Sandberg's book Lean In.

Wolfe_ei_picture_for_web__2__small Becky holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and has authored eight peer-reviewed journal articles, two magazine articles, four patents and seven additional patent applications. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University, she began her industrial career at a large chemical company in the Midwest. Her research focused on developing chemicals for air pollution control at coal-burning power plants, where she often found herself collecting samples for analysis while outfitted in a hard hat and steel-toed boots.

At this chemical company she got to serve on the leadership board of the women’s employee resource group, which helped spark a passion to empower and engage women in the workplace.

After having her son, she and her husband decided to move closer to family on the East Coast and Becky accepted a management position at the research and development facility of a global consumer beauty company in New York. Becky relishes the new challenge of bringing her scientific expertise to the beauty industry and very much enjoys thinking outside the box as part of the innovation department. While the beauty industry attracts more female scientists than the chemical industry, her passion for empowering women in the workplace remains and once again she finds herself sitting on the leadership board of the women’s employment group at her new company.

We will discuss the role of women's groups inside organizations. We will also be discussing her own experiences in the workplace and what she has learned that she feels is useful to pass along to other listeners.

This is especially exciting for me because Becky is my daughter! Hope you get to listen!

Emotionally Leaning in to Life: A Program for Women with Women #1 Lauri Rich

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 46:22

This is the first of the series of shows for Women with Women. Lauri Rich was my first guest and she addressed the question "Can a woman have it all?" Lauri was uniquely suited to help us launch this new program. See part of bio below. Please join us for future sessions on the first Wednesday of each month from 12-1 PM!

I talked with Lauri about her experiences working in organizations, running her own business, growing up, raising a family, creating a work life balance, successes she has had, challenges she has faced and overcome, and any insights she has gleaned that she can share with listeners. Lots of positive feedback from those that heard the show. Enjoy!

By leveraging her infinite connections in the marketplace and her expertise in career readiness and strategy, she has helped to identify, target and secure new opportunities for many.

Currently, Lauri serves as Director of Career Development and Outreach at Boston University School of Public Health.

Examples of what you will hear in the show.

Success, how do you define it: It likely changes over time , as life events occur (children, illness, financial stress, etc)...

How do women define themselves? S ome women define themselves by their "titles" vs their value

How do you show progress? T aking a step back   or sideways in your career is not a bad thing.  Up is not the only way!

Work/Life Balance is relative - you can have a successful career and family, but NOT necessarily at the same time (without a lot of help and leaning in from others!)

Take advantage of mentors – NETWORKING is critical and always remember to pay it forward when you can.

Pathways Togo - Educating Women, Empowering the World

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 50:58

Togo, a tiny country in Africa, is one of the world's poorest countries.
Despite clear evidence that educating girls and young women is the surest way to improve life in developing countries,Togolese girls and young women frequently have to drop out of school to work. Julia McNally and several other Peace Corps volunteers created Pathways Togo to provide educational resources to help Togolese women reach their full potential. Julia, and her Mother, Wendy Swift, who is the President of Pathways Togo, join Chuck Wolfe for a conversation about the powerful impact they are having.

By providing scholarships, life skills training, mentoring opportunities, and small-scale community improvement grants, Pathways Togo embraces the vision: educating women, empowering the world.

Pathways Togo scholarships are designed to remove the barriers to education that often make the difference between opportunity and despair for an individual, and between equality and poverty for a nation. Through one-on-one mentoring and annual conferences, Pathways Togo increases the impact of its scholarships by ensuring recipients gain the confidence and skills they need to make the most of their education. In selecting grantees, sponsoring mentors, and organizing conferences, we work with local partners to ensure scholars receive support and guidance from within their own communities.

By helping women fulfill their potential, Pathways seeks to make a sustainable, just contribution to Togo's development.

People could cite a number of accomplishments in a 44-year run in collegiate athletics to describe Pat Meiser, a Title IX trailblazer and one of the first female Division 1 University Athletic Directors. In the summer of 2014 she retired from the University of Hartford and is now beginning her own business to assist others in helping them to build their programs. Listen and learn about her journey as a leading female pioneer in athletics administration.

In her early career she took over the Penn State Women's college basketball team in a difficult time and turned the program around. Later in her career she served as an Associate Athletic Director where, among other accomplishments, she chaired the search committee that led to the hiring of Geno Auriemma at the University of Connecticut. In 1993 she became just one of thirteen women athletic directors at a Division 1 school when she became the Athletic Director for the University of Hartford. Over the past 21 years she brought in many highly talented coaches and created a scholar athlete culture that has resulted in numerous awards for the University. Pat was a guest in the series called "Emotionally Leaning in to Life: A Program for Women with Women" on Chuck Wolfe's radio show on WPKN, 89.5 FM in Bridgeport, CT and streaming live on wpkn.org.

Carrie Johnson - Her Story and Her Music

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 48:19

Carrie Johnson is from Simsbury, CT where I have seen her perform in a number of different venues; for example on stage in front of large crowds at outdoor music events, at our town library in nights of celebration where she has entertained children and adults with engaging music that celebrates different holiday traditions. She has an interesting history and she uses her music to help her and her audience manage their emotional experiences. She also has a wonderful strategy for involving young people in learning to sing and play music.

Logo_for_web_small Carrie attended Berklee School of music and formed a band with her sister. She and her sister were backup to singers such as Paula Abdul and she played on the Lilith Festival and then had a child and decided it was time to stay home. She and her family have gone through some trying times, divorce, addiction and her daughter's cancer. She uses her music to help her and I find her story and music compelling. I hope you do as well. You can learn more about her and where she is playing by going to www.carriejohnsonmusic.com Part of her sales from her music go to the Connecticut Children's Medical Center. In the interview you will learn how the Center helped Carrie and her family deal with her daughter's cancer.
