WVR - Show 342 (One Hour) - Vacation Getaway Special

From World Vision Report | Part of the World Vision Report - Weekly One Hour series | 58:59

Summer tourism with a twist is the theme this week on the World Vision Report.
In Nepal, we follow a street vendor who sells an exotic musical instrument to support his wife and four children.
If you’re in Shanghai this summer be sure to go see “Peasant DaVincis.” That’s an art exhibit of robots made by farmers.
And we discuss “poverty tourism” -- tours through slums to see and experience how people live in much of the developing world.
Those stories and more -- this week on the World Vision Report.

The Mikie Show #24, Patty

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:02

We speak with Patty Katchur, owner of Yikes Toys in Tucson, Arizona. It's the most fun toy store I’ve ever been to. Seems she was looking for change in her life and blamo, toy store. We get the run of a toy store for an hour, yay! (well, actually, fourteen minutes) Plus, our friend Tom the Scot drops by, there’s some news and Mikie looks through his junk drawer. How much can we stuff into one show? A lot!

Hustlers, Street Vendors, and Farmers by King Anyi Howell of Youth Radio

From YouthCast | 07:15

Class division, and therefore in a lot of urban areas, race division, can make for food issues that go beyond having a farmer’s market in your hood. King Anyi Howell visits a farmer's market in Los Angeles aimed at attracting black customers. The market wants to bring fresh produce to a neighborhood known for fast food restaurants.

One of my friends likes to make fun of farmer’s markets. Bikes! Hummus! Organic! Sustainable! He thinks it’s a bunch of yuppie stuff. And sometimes I have to agree: 6 dollar loaves of bread? 5 dollars a pound for tomatoes? I know I’m supporting the local growers, but I can't live like I have the money I think I should have.

(Ever hear of food deserts?King Anyi Howell visits a farmer's market in Los Angeles aimed at attracting black customers. The market wants to bring fresh produce to a neighborhood known for fast food restaurants.

Sarah Zhang, commenting on the piece on PRX, thinks this one is a little too local in topic for all listeners, but she (as well as your host) was impressed by the writing, editing, and voicing on this feature. Something to learn from Youth Radio producer and reporter King Anyi Howell.
