These are some selections from the pieces posted to PRX.

I narrate many stories but I have my favorites.

The Boars Head Tavern - East Cheap

From Roy Trumbull | 30:08

This piece was written by Washington Irving when he was in England. He wanted to celebrate Shakespeare in writing but demurred because much ground had been covered by others. Finally he hit upon looking up the tavern in East Cheap that was the watering hole for Prince Hal and Falstaff.

Default-piece-image-0 Washington Irving (1783 - 1859) is best known for Rip Van Winkle and also the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Both show up in The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon as does this story. Crayon was one of Irving's pen names. In the book Crayon attributes Rip Van Winkle to Diedrich Knickerbocker who was also an Irving invention.
Irving had to go to England to take care of some business and while there he wrote a detailed account of how Christmas was celebrated in England. It was very influential on the American celebration of that holiday. It also may be found in the Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon. Irving was determined to write an article about Shakespeare but found the ground had been thoroughly covered by other writers. Then while reading Henry IV Part 1 he hit upon the idea of searching for whatever might remain of the Boars Head Tavern and this is his account.

Rip Van Winkle

From Roy Trumbull | 47:09

Rip Van Winkle first appears in "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey (Jeffrey) Crayon" where it was attributed to the writings of Diedrich Knickerboker. Washington Irving, the actual author, wrote it while in England trying to repair his fortunes. At the time he'd never been to the Catskills. The story has many antecedents.

Default-piece-image-1 There is a short introduction that tells of Washington Irving's love of creating fictional characters and then naming them as the source for some information or story.

Miss Moose Meat

From Roy Trumbull | 06:46

I worked for 5 years as a staffer at a state college. Some 4 years later this silly story came together rather quickly. It's about a young lady, who for various reasons, won't forget about something others would drop like a hot rock.

Default-piece-image-2 During hunting season in Alaska a meat packer put up a savings bond for the winner of the Miss Moose Meat contest. The winner proudly makes mention of the fact much to the embarassment of her brother.
