Chinatown Youth Radio Philadelphia

In the summer of 2008, a group of teen radio producers launched the pilot program of Chinatown Youth Radio Philadelphia (ChYRP), with the support of community partners like Asian Arts Initiative, the Lang Center for Civic & Social Responsibility at Swarthmore College, the Learning Lab at WHYY, and the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation.

Over the course of three weeks, the ChYRP team learned the ins and outs of producing a radio program, and worked together with radio journalists and other mentors to produce radio pieces that share some of the many stories of Philadelphia Chinatown.

Engaging young people with radio production, ChYRP seeks to inspire a new generation of student journalists to think more critically about their community and the world around them and to become more effective and informed leaders of tomorrow, while filling in the longstanding gap of mainstream media’s coverage of the Asian American community.
