American Routes, hosted by Nick Spitzer, is a weekly two-hour public radio program produce at Tulane University in New Orleans.  It has been exclusively distributed by PRX since 2011. The show presents a broad range of American music — blues and jazz, gospel and soul, old-time country and rockabilly, Cajun and zydeco, Tejano and Latin, roots rock and pop, avant-garde and classical.

Each week, Nick Spitzer curates the tunes and explores cultural threads of American music. The program uses short documentary features and artist interviews to tell the stories. Artists heard on American Routes include Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, B.B. King, Dr. John, Dave Brubeck, Abbey Lincoln, Elvis Costello, Ray Charles, Randy Newman, McCoy Tyner, Lucinda Williams, Rufus Thomas, Jerry Lee Lewis and many others. The music-to-talk ratio of a typical American Routes program is 80% music and 20% talk.  In addition to 52 shows per year, there are two pledge drive programs. Custom promos are available.
